Put a nice big gob of white out on the mark and it’s done. If you are really sweating the crank lock pull the starter and drop in the flywheel lock. I think a 3/8 extension works for that , but I’ve never used one

I would highly recommend removing the timing belt *before* you remove the 30 mm nut, not after. Just release the tensioner, then the belt is slack and you can go to work.

Too late but thanks. I loosened all 4 bolts on the harmonic balancer, then the 30 mm nut. Then removed the tensioner, then slacked the TB, the removed the AUX belt. After that removed the loosened 30 mm nut and the 4 bolts. That worked well. Trying to do it any other way resulted in rotating the crank shaft. I had to stop in the middle of it all to go buy an impact socket to remove the 4 bolts on the harmonic balancer. I didn't think they would be a problem - they were.

It got dark so I stopped for the night. Tomorrow I'll pull the oil pump. I very curious to see what I'll find inside of it.

The harmonic balancer doesn't look great. It has a lot of radial cracks and a couple of places were the rubber has checked and some hunks have come out. I'm conflicted on buying a new one. It was doing its job (more or less) but the rubber is clearly getting hard to the point of cracking and losing pieces (surface only). I hate to put more money in the car not knowing how it will run when I put the new pump on. I'd appreciate your thoughts on this.

I already did it, but thanks. By loosening the 30 mm nut and the 4 bolts on three harmonic balancer with an impact wrench BEFORE doing anything else I was able to get everything off without rotating the crank shaft. Trying to loosen with just a ratchet did not work. It surprised me that the 4 small bolts would not come loose without a fight.

I'm conflicted on buying a new one.

I would buy a new one. I'm betting the harmonic balancer was not doing it's job well enough. It failed to dampen some heavy vibration and the vibration push a pump gear into the crescent.

I hate to put more money in the car not knowing how it will run when I put the new pump on.

Would you hate it less then putting time and money into it, only to have the root cause destroy another pump?

Just keep going and pull the oil pump. If you find the pump is failed you can make the call then.

Looks like a Volvo part is about $120

I was looking for some advice about how bad the harmonic balancer has to be before it's not serviceable. I intend to replace the oil pump regardless. I have a new one and it's not returnable, so I'm already committed.

- Of all these years in forums, I don't recall even a single post on failure of crank pulley (I may be wrong though).
These crank pulleys last some 300K-400K.

- However, if you are concerned, you can always buy a "good used" crank pulley for about $20-$30.
This ebay crank pulley looks very reasonable at $30:

In my past experiences - non-volvo - once it made contact with the timing belt or had enough wobble to knock the serpentine belt off, we'd replace it.

If it were me, I'd replace it and keep the old one as a backup - since you already have it apart :)
Wisdom requires knowledge as a prerequisite, but knowledge can be developed due to a lack of wisdom.
In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

The words of wisdom are: If there is any doubt about its integrity, replace it. Just as one should do with timing belts or any other critical component.

Based on your description the harmonic balancer is out or is on its way out. Might as well replace it when you got everything apart. Do you want do this a second time?
