The coils each ground through the M6 bolts as well as the wiring harness

These coil packs have the primary's power stage built into the coil pack.
The M6 bolt is the ground for the power stage. The secondary winding is grounded through the wire harness.

M6 bolt, Power Stage ground.
Solid Black, Secondary Ground.
Red, Common Primary Coil supply voltage.
Yellow, Common Power stage collector voltage from ECM.
X/Black Power stage control signal from ECM. X is a different color for each of the five cylinders.

At least I'm tech-savvy enough to drop this pic in. For reference, this is on the driver's side going into the intake manifold. Looks like a sensor of some kind, and probably broke when I had this line laid back for removing the manifold. It was cracked when I found it, it easily peeled back as you now see in the photo. Might this have anything to do with my problems? I'm sure it can't help. I tried taping it into place but that sure didn't help matters.

Thanks for all the comments I haven't responded to ... I'll check on these things. I've foolishly chosen to start this work in an open carport ... should've moved the vehicle to my heated shop before starting this work. Suffice it to say work is slow, with many breaks to warm numbed fingers & frozen feet.

Thanks again to all who are assisting.

Lol

That's a massive vacuum leak direct into the intake manifold right where it will do its worst.

It's the brake " ejector pump" which is a clever way of making sure your power brakes have boost under all engine running conditions

So, once you get it plugged up and your engine running we'll, you will find you have no brakes.

OK, while you're LOL ... I'm not!!! Obviously it's a massive leak now, but it was just a hard-to-see crack before I went ahead & peeled it back. So now that's identified I'll look for the part(s) to square this away. Wouldn't hurt to check on all the other issues everyone has brought up as well.

Booster Vacuum Ejector? Looks like part # 30665561 ... found it on FCP. Excellent - I like sub-$100 parts. Obviously needs to be replaced, and I would very much like this to be that magic bullet to get this vehicle mobile again.

And ... going back to the original failure, I assume if this failed catastrophically then that could explain why it was running fine one minute and sputtering the next.

Finding a massive vacuum leak on a Volvo translates into Swedish as ...a good start.

Keep looking at all the vacuum lines , take them off. Blow into them and listen, feel for defects

Don't kick yourself, your not the only one that has made errors in judgement due to weather.

Det är en bra början

Jattebra, RHP.

Don't pat me on the back too much. I only learned enough Swedish to swear when a repair not going well. Swearing at a Volvo in English does no good.

If you Volvo your own, anger goes away. Check local laws before you Volvo.
