Looking at a very nice 2004
sellers says the motor won't crank. Has lights and radio but no crank or start.
208000 miles. VERY nice, clean vehicle. I think it's a repo. And ideas? Never owned an XC before. Anything to stay away from?

Very little to go on. I would want to see if there are messages in the cluster relevant to the problem.
Is there a noise, clunk, like the starter engages flywheel but can't move the engine due to bad starter or locked engine.
Does the gear position in the cluster show actual position when gear lever is moved or does it show -- -- because the network or TCM is offline.
A 2.5T XC90 is a good vehicle. That is the reliable powertrain for that year model of that vehicle.

UPDATE: The owner called me back today. The car was purchased at an auction. The guy's boss bought a bunch of cars with the intention of starting a dealership but had no plan and nothing ever happened. The guy's boss has tasked him with getting rid of everything as-is. The car has not been started in a year. He doesn't know anything about Volvos and doesn't know if it is merely the battery being completely dead (although it has lights) or maybe the smart key being faulty. 208000 miles on the motor. Care is very clean

I'd try to jump the battery from a running car see if it starts. The starters rarely go bad on these engines unless one keeps them turning for long time.
If the starter still doesn't turn, there may be a 'start prevented' message if the car doesn't recognise the key for some reason - someone had this when the carbattery went flat. Not sure what would be the fix for such issue.
