I just thought that was a very plausible cause, If not I'm confident its the ECT sensor as they go quite a bit in the 850 models

Trickle chargers don't harm batteries. They are designed to do the opposite, to maintain the battery condition when batteries are not used in a long time. You don't need to disconnect the battery either.

A bad coolant temp sensor will not cause a slow turn over of the engine. It may cause it not to start though.

Clean all the engine grounds and check the battery +ve and -ve leads for corrosion of the cables and each of their connections are good. A bad ignition switch electrical portion may also cause this. Many years ago I have an old Volvo 122S that was a bear to start even with a new battery. I had to carry a spare battery and booster cables to get it started or bump start it. Couldn't figure out what the issue was as it ran fine otherwise. Eventually found a broken ground cable below the engine from the muffler to the frame. Replaced that and starting returned to normal.
