There are two different versions of the TD04HL-15G-7 for '97 850 T5 Volvo part numbers 6842744 & 9146785.
The '97 850 T5 R got the TD04HL-16T-7 Volvo part number 8601238.

He does not say what S70 the turbo comes from.

Interesting point on the two part numbers, perhaps one supersedes the others and they reflect production sequence? From everything I have ever known there is only one physical version of the 15G. I'd be interested to know if anyone knows of actual differences.

A T5-R (an "R") is not a T5!

I completely agree we don't know what the replacement turbo is, best is to look on the plate as you and others have mentioned.

Type "motronic" and ask your spell check to answer that!

I think only the manual transmission R models (which again, would be strictly non-USA so I am not super confident of this) came with the 16T.
