An Oily Mess

Post by CarVolvo »

I noticed a little oil puddle on my 240 sedan non turbo. Then i started driving it and ...smoke everywhere.. guess i have a leak.

It appears that it is coming from the top front of the lifter cover. It is leaking down from this point and then moving all over the engine when the car is operating and blowing all over the manifold from the cooling fan.

Im guessing it is a cam shaft seal .. but i do recall i had another leak on one of my other 240's and it was some time of rubber frost plug. I didnt make the repair so im not sure what it was.

I now want to fix this.. so anyone have any expert advice on what it is and how easy or difficult it is?

Thanks in advance!

There are 3 seals in front: l- cam, 2- midshaft 3-crankshaft. Change all 3 and make sure your oil trap is clear of debris so you engine has a vacuum at idlle.

Just going from memory, which isn't what it used to be so what was the question?

Enough - there is a small plug in the front of the head. It is just lower than the cam seal on the passenger side (LHD) of the cam pulley. I don't know what it is there for but it could be the plug you mention.

thanks! i figure its the seals that are damages.. im guessing the top one for the cam seal.

just needed to confirm this since it is coming from the front of the engine!

Take a look at the flame trap. If it is plugged the pressure builds and oil ogoes everywhere!

The small round plug is at the back of the head where the distributor plugs in on the 740's, the front has a half plug. They are not frost plugs- they are just to plug the holes the factory used to machine the cam bores.
