At 280,000 km (175,000 mi.) wasn't the fluid black? Surely one D&F didn't return the system fluid to clear red.

I know how expensive things in Sweden can be but do give additional D&F's some thought.
I did four or so with a bit of driving in between until it was red, not just the one. The fluid was pretty black to begin with, yes. I've still got enough fluid for two more that I will space out every 20000 km just to use the oil up.

There is one product which was recommended to me and I will suggest it to you.
LubeGard in the red bottle. It is said to be a lubricant of "newer" technology.
Like most people I am suspicious of "mechanics in a can" but this one worked for me. It is from a leader in the industry.

I added it to my balky transmission and it worked. A TCM download helped in the first place by curing 75% of my problems. The LubeGard knocked out most of the remaining roughness.

Recommended dosage is 1 oz. per system quart. Therefore add 7 oz. to a full trannie.
It's good to start with fluid as clean as you can get it. Add it after your next D&F. Then, with your last D&F you can add the bottle's remaining 3 oz.

This stuff worked so well I bought a large quart bottle after I emptied the 10 oz. bottle.

After getting reassurance from this thread I started my drain and fill regime for my 2006 with 189k miles today. Drained and replaced 3.75 quarts with Mobil 1 3309. Ater driving maybe 15 miles everything still seems fine (I had no serious problems before). What do people think is the ideal number of miles to do between drain and fills? Some people suggest almost nothing (idle, shift thru gears and drain/fill again), others seem to advocate a few hunderad miles to make sure the old and new fluid mix. I'm erring towards more time/miles between drain/fills., maybe a 100 miles?

How long it takes one to drive X miles is a factor. I believe the fluid mixes essentially immediately except for the TC.
The rate at which the torque converter drains upon shut-down is apparently one thing nobody knows.
I've heard dirt accumulates there. Any refreshed fluid needs to get into it to do any "cleaning".

I shoot for ~500 miles to give the refreshed fluid time to "pick up dirt". No science is involved.
I'm happy to report the history of my car included a "16 qt. B&G pump-out" 4 years and <30,000 mi. before I got it.
The bad news is that the car was likely an urban/suburban kid hauler. There's a bit of dirt still in evidence after 4 D&F's.

I'm at 81K now and have supplies remaining for one D&F which I'll do while installing an inline filter.
At 100K (knock on wood-and not a tree) I'll do a "cooling line disconnect pump out" (probably 12 qt.).

NOTE: I suggest a D&F before a pump out so the active process starts with pumping fresh fluid. My '99 had jet black fluid which ran to clean red after 8 qts. due to this.

I only drove a few miles between each drain and fill when I did mine. I think it was probably the first time it was done on the car at 280 k km. Did four or something and then the fluid looked nice and clean.

At 300 k km I did another and it still looked clean so it doesn't seem to have cleared out that much dirt during that time. I'll be doing one more this spring at 320 k km, see how it looks then. Still have fluid left so might as well use it.

Four D&F's got you clean. Then after 20K km the fluid still looked clean AFTER or BEFORE the D&F?
Condition of the fluid "sounds good". Go to 330K km for the next one.
Clean fluid-clean mind!

Can you sell your used ATF fluid to someone in Calgary?

Filter it through a coffee filter and label it 'remanufactured' ?

The fluid that I drained looked clean 20 k km later. Should mean not too much dirt came loose from the new fluid.

When the next time is is more a question or convenience to coincide with oil changes.

I did 3 drain and fills on my 2001 V70 2.4 T when I got it with 93K miles. The transmission ended up going out and I had a used one put in at about 120K. I kept the car until 205K with drain and fills every 5000 miles.

I bought my 2005 V70R at 101K. It had a bit of jerk at the shifts. I have been doing 3 liter drain and fills every 5K. It's now got 145k and the transmission seems to be holding steady.

3l drain every 5k is actually...pretty easy on the wallet. For a full cycle it needs 12l and those aren't exactly cheap.
