Good general rules, and there are even a few more options. You can also interchange a stock 97-98 2.4 turbo (the GLT turbo; note the 96 and earlier the GLT was not turbo) with a stock 94-98 2.3 turbo (the T5), all you want. Keep the same turbo in place or use a T5 ECU if you are swapping a T5 engine into a GLT.

There is a break in the auto transmissions speed sensor setup between 95 and 96, with the way the speedo gets the signal. It is easy to fix but takes a little DIY of splicing wires, worth noting if you are talking about swapping auto transmissions between years.
