For me the main advantage in Europe is more of the cars have stick shifts not autos like here. Ever tried to rent a stick shift in UK? Twice the price of an auto.

We're swinging around to autos here as well. Before only a small portion of cars were autos. Now mostly cheap or poorly equipped cars are manuals. And some sports cars.

I'm never buying a manual again I think. Maybe if I get a sports car of some kind. But I'd rather have an auto with paddles I think.

I read it as US instead of UK since that made more sense :-)

Yes as usual the brain was running behind the hands typing. Renting an AUTO in Europe is 2 x price of a stick shift/manual.

In Sweden most rentals in the premium segment are autos. Cheap cars are manuals. But to be guaranteed an auto you have to pay some extra though not too much.

SWMBO took 7 ladies on an Italy vacation last year and was going to rent two Fiat autos for her and sister to shuttle people - Hertz ran out of cars and she negotiated a stick diesel van seating 7 for 1/4 the price. None of the other tourists could drive stick, so she bent them over the transmission and dipsticked them on price.

SWMBO driving stick for the win....

I have only driven a stick shift once since moving to Canada 17 years ago from Scotland. However, returning to UK it means my 2 brain cells adapt back to driving on the other side of the car and road much quicker as I mostly only drove stick in European driving.

I'd still have a stick transmission for 'fun' driving but as I A) don't drive much any more B) mostly do either town driving or log distance driving, auto trans are better suited.

We have three sticks in our fleet, which I prefer for winter driving. Business wise I rarely get caught in stop and go anymore - the Volvos drive well in heavy, moving traffic if I stay in 3-4th gear.

The P2 can go from 10-50 in third so it really is nice in NY/NJ traffic.

The turbo Beetle needs a lot of stirring of the gear shift but with the top down, you don't mind

Wisdom requires knowledge as a prerequisite, but knowledge can be developed due to a lack of wisdom.
In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.
