1999 V70 Codes, Dash Lights, and Oil Smell

I have gone through the maintenance records that were given to me.
Some spark plugs and coils have been replaced in the last year.
the timing belt was changed 4 years/30,000 miles ago along with the water pump, timing idler pulley, timing idler pulley, front brake pads, and the thermostat and gasket.
More recently the rack and pinion steering, alternator, and an expansion tank have been replaced.
it does not say which expansion tank, maybe it was the coolant tank and the sensor was not connected...

I found a mechanic report from last summer that had the P0722 and P1057 codes listed from inspection. Obviously these codes have been going on for a while.
So that would mean these other codes are newer than last summer.

Okay I had the mechanic look over it, he said the car looks to be in great shape. He had a nicer OBD2 reader than I have and he pulled a bunch of codes all related to the speed sensor. He said replace the speed sensor and see what is still showing malfunction.

So next repairs, heater core and output speed sensor.
The only one I can find online is the input sensor...

Your foot shouldn't need to be to the floor for small hills. I have one or two widow makers out this way that require a little gas, but nothing like that.

Sounds like you may have purchased a great car for an even better price that just needs a little work =)

Where is the speed sensor? I can’t find a clear guide as to where it is and my shop manuel hasn’t come in the mail yet

If it is the ABS wheel speed sensors - they're located right behind the calipers if you remove the wheels. Should be two wires coming out of it, brown and black if my memory is correct (don't trust it, I don't...)

I am confused...I cannot find an output speed sensor for sale or even the location of the sensor.
I have found an input speed sensor for sale, but the symptoms of that sensor being dead is a faulty tach and a different fault code altogether.

All of the threads I have found had the P0722 Transmission Output Speed Sensor code fixed when the ABS module was replaced.
But...i replaced my ABS module and I still have this code(but the dead speedo and abs light are now corrected).
I am very confused...

If its the wheel speed sensors, I can do that. I have done that on another car in the past, thats easy. But I from what I can find online the VSS on the wheels is different from the tran output speed sensor.
My plan for this week is to replace the heater core(ordered) and the output speed sensor.

I actually really enjoy the car so far, its been fun to drive. The mechanic and his buddies were impressed with it, when I showed them the fold up third row seat they were like "this is so cool! I haven't seen a car with a seat like that!"
So that made me smile a little bit. But fixing this check engine light would make me smile even more LOL

With all the work you need to do, get Volvo Vida+DiCE.

Check the wiring and connectors between the speed sensors and the TCM.

#17 is the Transmission speed sensor and is Volvo part number 9495008.
#19 is the Speed sensor and is Volvo Part number 9496115.

Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) information

A4300697 Condition
The automatic transmission control module (TCM) receives speed signals from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) on the transmission. The transmission control module (TCM) uses the signals to select the correct gear. The control module derives and compares the transmission speed with engine speed (RPM) at the transmission. Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) TCM-0020 is stored if the control module registers that transmission vehicle speed signal does not correspond to the transmission speed (RPM).

Substitute value
None.

Possible source

Contact resistance in terminals.
Open-circuit, short-circuit to ground, short-circuit to supply voltage in power supply.
Open-circuit, short-circuit to ground, short-circuit to supply voltage in signal cable.
Defective vehicle speed sensor (VSS).

Fault symptoms
General orange warning lamp lit.
Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lit.
No lock-up function.
Harsh gear shifting.

Hint: Harsh gear shifting can be caused by:
No adaptation of the gear slippage times at high altitude (High Altitude Compensation).
No reduction of line pressure when shifting.
No reduction of line pressure when moving the gear selector between positions P-R, N-R and N-D.
No torque limiting request to engine control module (ECM) when shifting.

Yeah, that one should work.
If it were me I'd wait on buying parts until I can verify what signal the ECU claims to be receiving.
