1998 Volvo s70 front CV axles question

Post by DanGLT5 »

So my 1998 s70 GLT needed some new front axles, car shakes on acceleration. Recently pulled off a pair of the front CV axles from a 99 S70 GLT from the junkyard, noticed that the axles from the 99 s70 had bolts while the CV axles from my 98 s70 had Nut locks. Was wondering if the 99 s70 CV axles would be a direct swap/fit in 98s?

Check the length of each axle and number of splines on each end.

Also check the point where the axle seals fit in the transmission to make sure the seal positions are the same.

Finally the later axles have a rubber seal between the back of the wheel bearing and the face of the axle to keep dirt out. Not sure these are essential.

Manual advises the bolts are a one use item as a stretch to torque.

Should also add, although I believe the carrier bearing on the RH axle is in the same place just confirm it is as they are held in place differently.

I don't recall anyone ever swapping the newer (99+) style axles into a 98, I kind of doubt it would work. Neil, are you saying it might?

I haven't heard of anyone doing that either. I've changed an axle on my '98 and my cousin's '99, and I can't recall any other differences that stood out to me.

Are we sure that the car is a 98 and not a 99 ? I had one that a mechanic insisted was a 97 based on build date not VIN

Reading the link, it would tend to say you are better off getting a 98 axle for a 98 car (and check the auto/manual differences).

I thought I recall reading about someone doing the swap but couldn't recall where. The fact you have to swap the wheel bearings sucks though.

Not sure why you would have to swap the ABS sensors though unless the reluctor ring is sitting a different position or has a different number of notches. Biggest issue would be if the number of splines on the axle end are different.

This would make an interesting project if I had the time and not too many other projects.

I would suggest selling the axles you got for the 99 and buy the correct ones for your model/year/trans. As you are in BC Dan, try Chapman Motors Inc on the island and maybe see if you can even arrange a swap. I have had used axles from them in the past. They are pricey but genuine good Volvo items.

I think the reluctor ring is a little different. I know for sure the wheel speed sensor itself is different. On my '98, I can just unplug the connector, while on the '99 I remember having to remove the whole sensor.
