1997 850 Keyless Entry?

Post by Stadger »

I just bought a '97 850 sedan and it did not come with a fob. It has the flashing led on the dash and the lights flash when the doors are locked with a key so it seems that it has an alarm system. I called the local dealership with the vin to see if it has keyless entry and they said that since it was over ten years old they did not have the records. Apparently the receiver, if any, is on top of the gauge cluster on this model and the correct fob is an expensive one or two-year-only dealy. Before I spend $80 on a fob is there any easy way to tell if this car is equipped with keyless entry?

For an 850 the transmitter is behind the glove box. You will need to pull it out and you should be able to see a black box, probably about the size of a billfold wallet. It's attached to one green plug. If you have that then you just need to get the remote. Super easy to program. If you do not have the transmitter you can pick one up from Pickapart and just plug it in. Then once that's in get yourself a fob and program it. The transmitter box it on top of the instrument cluster on the 70 series models
If I paid attention to signs with little symbols I’d never find anywhere to park.

As was said, you can buy a used remote keyfob on eBay or at a salvage yard. You do need to know which system you have behind the glove box. There are two versions and you need to get a compatible remote. In order to determine which version you have in the car you need to remove the glove box and look at the label on the receiver. Specifically, you need the part number and the FCC identifier number. Ignore the big numbers since they won't tell you anything. The part number and the FCC identifier are on the silk-screened label and there is often a piece of tape that holds the wire covering what you need to read.

Once you have the part number and the FCC identifier post the number back and we can tell you which remote you need for the system to work.

The eBay sellers are notorious for claiming compatibility with all 850s - '93-'97 - and that simply isn't so.

There are some other variations of the remote / alarm system that do require dealer intervention but they aren't very common in the US unless you have an R.

This is the one that you need and it is little more new than on EBay.
The keyless entry control is not behind the glovebox on the '97s, it is near the instrument cluster, but there is only one remote for it.

hi
you can try to find your alarm control module (integrated in relay number 210-211), under fuse box.
https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=60944
you can reach them from below the steering column.
find the relay and take a note on the part number.
if you got p/n 9166157 (like mine) then you need remote fob p/n 9442381.
good luck
:)
