1997 855: Keyless entry system troubleshooting

Post by Py »

Hello,

Happy owner of a nice 97' 855 since 2008 (I clocked about 100k miles myself until now ;-)), I installed a few years ago the OEM keyless entry module (Volvo P/N 9148645). I also grabbed 2 matching remotes on ebay.

I plugged the module where it belongs (right hand behind the glove box) and programmed both remotes. It worked flawlessly right away, and continued doing so for years.

Recently, it stopped working. In the meanwhile I had lost (and not yet replaced) the second remote, so I can't use it for a cross-test. Anyway, thinking it was the remote's battery, I changed it, but it didn't help. So I tried to reprogram the remote, and it didn't work either. I retried the process several times (it had worked first time back when I installed this whole stuff, so I'm pretty sure I do it the right way), but no luck.

One thing that I can mention (probably not relevant, but just in case) is that the blinkers have never been activated when using the remote to open or close the car. I was surprised at first (I thought all cars would blink once or twice in this case), but since the doors where opening/closing properly, I didn't dig anymore and relied on the locks' noise instead of the blinkers. I mention this because if it is not supposed to behave this way, it might be a hint for what might have broken down...

Anyway, basically, I now have 3 trails I can follow:

1) FOB is dead -> get a new one and see if I can get the system back to work
2) Receiver is dead -> get another one like I did in the first place
3) FOB and receiver are fit, however its the central locking module that does not take the receiver's command into account (central locking works very well when I use the key in any af the locks)

I have no real idea about how to test and "formally" check each individual component in the system. Is there a way to do so, or should I just replace parts starting with the cheapest one?

Looking at the central locking schematics, it seems there is a single wire going from the receiver to the central locking system. Does someone know if this wire transmits a simple impulse to toogle the central locking module position, or if there is a more elaborated communication scheme between those parts?

If it is a simple +12V impulse, I could test it easily and see if something happens. But if it isn't, or if it is not working at 12V, well, I do not want to fry anything ;-) si I ask first if someone knows about this.

So please, any comments or hint about this whole system are welcome to help me troubleshoot this annoying issue!

Thanks in advance from Belgium!
Py
