ECM-6110 Engine Cooling Fan Relay - Signal Missing

Post by carboncow »

Friend bought a very clean but mechanically basket case 2002 XC70. One of the several codes I"m not familiar with is:

ECM-6110 Engine Cooling Fan Relay - Signal Missing

I had to replace a fan module (or the whole fan I forgot) on my 2003 once but that was the fan stuck on high even with car off.

Is this a small black relay somewhere or is this in fact the main module?

What can you guys tell me?
Shawn F.

I believe there is no dedicated Black Relay for the cooling fan; its speed control module is the grey box on the fan shroud like in this picture: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... 30680547oe

I will try to locate the electrical and confirm later on today;
Thanks
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

Sorry could not get to the exact YMM schematic, but the arrangement on the attached page is very similar (if not exactly the same)

The Control Module 4/71 is on the Cooling Fan 6/29 shroud; the assy is hot-powered (Red Wire) from Batt+ via fuse, and is PWM-driven (violet wire) by the ECM.
The SB is chassis ground.

The code indicates that the ECM cannot see if the fan control is being powered and/or driven; I would check the connector on that violet wire (loose, recessed or oxidized pins) and then verify solid +12 volts between the Red wire and ground (with a light bulb) before condemning the fan control. These usually fail shorted so the fan will run on high.

If wiring checks good, then a trip to the bone yard for a whole fan assy will be well in order :D

You will have an error ECM-6110 in case of replacing fan-module for the restyle one, high efficiency type - it has twice much blades on it, and integrated with motor control unit
People say the configuration should be changed at dealer of elsewhere for ECM to realize that new unit type was installed. Unfortunately its not "plug and play"
Have same issue by now. Fan is working fine and correct, only the error in Vida is an issue.

P.s. those are the mentioned visual differences
