So I was helping a friend with his 96 850 turbo (60k) when he lost all boost. We found the intercooler hose popped off due to loose clamp. Also found a couple cracked vacuum lines going to the turbo and replaced those.
Test drove the car and it seemed almost back to normal, still lacking a little power compared to before the problems started.
So we decided the computer probably needed a reset, and disconnected the battery for about an hour while we got lunch.
Came back and hooked the battery back up, and now the car will not crank at all, but the battery has 12.4 volts. We also noticed that when putting the shifter in Reverse or any other gear with the key in position 2, the car goes into neutral and will roll.
The up Arrow does not Flash with the key in position 2.
Does this mean the pnp switch is out?
We rode the shifter back and forth many times but didn't get any different. He did mention that once recently it didn't start while in park and he shifted back and forth once and got it to start after that.
Thanks!
850 turbo no crank

Checked for fault codes and there are none stored.
Tried locking/unlocking driver door 5 times but still won't crank.
Any ideas?

So the reverse lights come on when shifting into reverse, but the car rolls as if in neutral if any gear is selected except park.
When in park it doesn't move.

Anyone?
Would like to do any testing I can before blindly ordering parts.

It certainly sounds like PnP or shifter adjustment! Search the Volvo repair database for procedures on that, they are on there

Ok thank you I will look for that.
Forgot to mention this is an auto trans.
So if I find it is adjusted properly I guess it must be the PNP switch then?
Just seems odd it failed after the battery was disconnected /reconnected.
Although my buddy hooked up the positive battery terminal back up after the ground, which made me cringe a little.
Hope that didn't fry something.

You didnt have to, since manuals don’t have PnP switches

Doing the positive last is more a threat to the mechanic than the car.

It a '96, is there not a jumper block under the fuse block that can be used to bypass the PnP? It the wiring harness used to bridge the starting circuit on manual transmissions that do not have a PnP. Good for confirming a PnP is the cause of a no crank.

I had a similar problem on my v70xc.
Turned out that the 'shift lock override' button was partially depressed and seized with gunk (breadcrumbs, dust, etc.).
Cleaning the button (loads of wd40) and pulling it up using pliers solved it for me!
Not sure the 850 has this button though?

On the PnP switch there is a Green/Red and a Green wire. Place a jumper across the two wires. If the car will crank with the jumper in place your problem is with the PnP switch. If it still will not crank, the problem is elsewhere.
Keep your foot on the brake as you turn the key, the jumper defeats a safety feature and will allow the engine to start with the transmission in gear. I don't recommend driving with the jumper in place. One might end up with higher insurance rates if one forgets.
