I think Wizechatmgr gets the credit for that one - it describes it perfectly....brutal...

Well, lets say that moisture is building in the car because the AC doesn't work in 40 degree weather... Then 1 hour later it's 28 degrees. The Moisture will freeze. Bottom line is, the AC compressor helps defrost the windows 10 times faster than not. I have found myself scraping ice in one of my Volvo's when the AC didn't work in the winter. Not a issue here in the desert but hey, it's your ride, do what you want.

The a/c system can be evacuated and charged but few will do it right. In weather below 75 degrees the evacuation will not readily evaporate the moisture. To assure it does you run the car and turn on the heater and close the hood. This way the evaporator, condenser, compressor, and lines get warmer than 75 degrees and you know the moisture will be removed. The compressor for defrost is effective down to 36 F and not much below. The relative humidity being high at that temp is a very low actual content of water vapor in air. The ambient temp monitoring by CCM will caue it to drop compressor request to ECM. When temp gets to 36F the refrigerant pressure due to temp is about 42 psi and when compressor comes on the low side will drop quickly and it will be short on cycle and long off period as pressure drop to 24 psi cuts of compressor via the pressure cycling switch. In order for it to come on again pressure has to rise to 42 psi and that will take a while at that temp so it will run 12 sec off 60-80 sec and then on again 12 or so sec. At about 32 the compressor might run once cycle and never get high enough to close press-cycling switch to come back on. The manual climate cars and older cars relied only on pressure cycling switch to kill compressor at too low temps for it to be needed.

Exactly the same evaporator in a 2000 V70 as in an 850. Same part number too. I used the 850 tutorial in the Repair Database when removing mine about 4 years ago. Nice big hole in the corner of it......I had a cabin filter from the factory too.
Unfortunately the A/C in that car was only meant to work for 3 months until it again lost refrigerant. Dye was used and no evidence found; at least not on external components. Being RHD I bought my evaporator from Britain but there was a tear in the box where the fins were located and a small dent in the core. I couldn't pressure test it apart from a dunk in water with compressed air filling it but of course I could never duplicate the pressures that the A/C system produces.
Beware the packaging and any small knicks on the core surface of a new one.

Pretty sure they don't go to Australia or NH on a service call though...
Wisdom requires knowledge as a prerequisite, but knowledge can be developed due to a lack of wisdom.
In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

Maybe they will reconsider now they at they have 1,000,000 requests for AC service from Romania in this inbox. I wonder if they will get angry when people misuse the internet for free advertising?
