Caliper Pin lube

Post by bob-in-va »

Hi,

I am preparing for a brake job and find conflicting information on caliper pin lubricants. The clerk at Advance Auto (not much smarter than dirt) had never heard of red rubber grease, but sold me a tube of Permatex 85188 which clearly states for use on caliper pins; however, does not specifically state safe for rubber. It says "synthetic lubricant" and in the caution section says "contains synthetic oils". I saw a YouTube video (and several other reviews) that caution use of this 85188 product because it swells rubber parts. On the back of his lube tube on the YouTube video it says "contains petroleum distillates". Other members of the internet TKN (Tribal Knowledge Network) claim this product (85188) has caused certain rubber components to swell. However, the rubber components vulnerable to swelling seem to also be of a particular rubber compound. Anyone have experience or advise on caliper pin lube for Volvo S40s? I have not torn into her yet, so not even sure if it has rubber seals on the caliper pins.

Thanks in advance,

I'd get this one. Honestly, it's so much better and different than other 'silicone' greases out there, I'm using it everywhere, not just on the calipers, and I'm about to actually run out of it.

Thanks, I ordered a tube. I saw ATE had a 75 ml tube with the same product number at 3/4 the price, but did not describe the compound at all. Is the ATE the same stuff?

I use it on the rubber weatherstrip around the windows and doors. June
