I have a similar problem on my 2001 V70. A mechanic who knows transmissions also recommended trying a friction modifier before replacing the tranny, he mentioned ATP Products sells a good one.

Anyone here tried one of these modifiers? My tranny shifts fine when cold and cool, but when hot it delays engaging gear quite often, revs shoot up, and chirps the tires when engaged.

After I posted last night, I went through the maintenance records I had and on the first trip to the dealer after the purchase, they flushed and replaced the fluid along with the software reprogam.

i remember something similar with my 01xc70, shifting hard, took to Volvo, they advised flushing the trans fluid to see if it helped, when they flushed they noticed alot of gunk in the existing oil, indicating pre-existing problem, poor maintenance care, put in new oil but problem not as bad, but bad enough for them to conclude, "you need a new transmission," &*%$! the dealer who sold me the car was ***** (5-star), they installed a new transmission at no cost to me (not sure if my contacting the Group 1 Automotive Corp Office and subsequent contact to dealership by vip at Group 1) motivated them to do the right thing, as they [salesman & lead mechanic]) new the trans was bad when they sold the car, even after I asked them to check the trans b4 I wrote my check... the managing dir told me, "sometimes one slips the cracks" meaning the lead mechanic make a mistake in judgement. So visit-after-visit to dealership, in-their-face with angst and disappointment, but persevering their "oh no, she's back, again!" got what I was due--a new transmission.
Also, since I was told it is a delicate and labor intensive task to remove old tranny, but even more critical installing the new one, things could go wrong with the installation process which could cause problems to the new trans, and the reprogram software is a gradual process, "you'll notice the transmission with new program, reprogramming itself, adjusting sometimes while you drive, but it'll smooth out over a short time."
