2002 S80 Misfire 2.9l non turbo

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

It might be neither, thats why im saying you need to make sure the VVT unit was set correctly to begin with when the belt was done. Clear the code, when it comes back check the freeze frame data and see when it threw the P0016. That might give you come clues. Theres a series of checks done at different stages such as a continuity test and soforth by the ECU. Its documented in VADIS somewhere.

Thanks boosted...

I do not see the P0016 anymore. The only time that code appeared was when I left the bad idle to occur for many many minutes.
It will show the P0300 code regularly if left to misfire for a minute or so.
Most of the time my check engine light is off.

If the timing was not set to begin with and was physically set wrong, would you expect the car to run perfectly at various times? I think that is what is confusing me.

I really do appreciate the help and hope to get to the bottom of this.
Cheers

OK well we are both confused as hell LOL. In my case when my VVT was off, idle was lumpy but cruising and soforth was silky smooth. We need to get the freeze frame data next time it throws the P0300.

I wonder if some people don't update threads for fear of jinxing. lol. :D

Replaced the VVT Solenoid and so far the car has not missed a beat, idle is fixed.

Touch wood (superstitious much?) the problem is resolved and doesn't come back.

Cheers for the help to those that contributed. Hope it helps someone else in future.

I'm new to this forum, not new to fixing cars.

I had very similar symptoms with a car years ago. Head scratching, stayed late to fix it. Found a bad ground caused after another mechanic missed the step of reconnecting the ground.

might be worth checking- Random symptoms can be caused by poor ground.

Bigmaxy .... I have the same problem with my S80. So you replaced the VVT Solenoid and that fixed the problem? Please let me know. Thanks

Hi Kirbula. TBH that was about 7 years ago and I didn't have that car too long so I can't recall the details. I would have come back and updated the thread though if it wasn't resolved. Good luck though. Hope you get it fixed. :-)

Okay. So the VVT Solenoid could be bad or could just be a poor ground.

Because I've replaced all the spark plugs with OEM plugs, I've replaced a bad coil pack and I used Blue Devil in the heating system just in case there are any hairline cracks any where.

My next move was going to be replacing ALL the coil packs. But I'm interested in Bigmaxy's situation. If I could replace that part, knock on some wood, and be done with this nightmare I would.

I want my strong running Volvo back!

Thank You!!

I am STILL OPEN to anyone else in this forum giving me any ideas. I feel as if I am right on top of the solution and it's driving me nuts.
