Check engine & ABS warning lights
Check engine & ABS warning lights
We bought our 2000 XC70 used, and since we've had it, the ABS warning light has come off and on. It might go 3 days without coming on, then it will light up and maybe go off the next time we drive it. We just got new brakes & rotors put in 2 weeks ago. After my last fill up, the check engine light came on, went off for a couple of drives and is back on! The car seems to be driving just fine.

The two symptoms are not related.
The ABS light is almost certainly a bad ABS module. Fully 100% of these modules will go bad. Here's a link that will give you more info and a cheaper repair path if you're so inclined.

The check engine light could be many many different things. I would suggest you visit an Autozone or someplace that can read the code for you for free and then come back to us here on the forum. The fact that it happened after you filled up the car may indicate it's related to the Evap system. If you gas cap is leaking or not put on tight it will set a CEL. Also if you refill the car while it's running it will also set a CEL.

I just did my ABS module repair yesterday, as stated in the stickty post about ABS module at the top of the forum page. I had the car about 1 month when my ABS started coming on intermitently. The snap on code reader at work didn't sync with my car so I just hoped it was the module. Opened it up (take your time) and everything looked perfect, it wasn't until I started looking at each pin when I saw a crack all the way around the solder on 1 of the pins. They are very tight and I didn't want to do all of them so I just fixed the one pin and temp closed it, then ran if for the day. No ABS light. Didn't do any others in case I broke something thats not already broken. Removed it again, PRC'd it closed, and re-installed.
Good way to save money. No light yet, if it comes on again I will just remove it and inspect (literaly takes 2 min to remove after a couple times).

Pfeener - You asked for the codes on the CEL. Autozone found Code #P1171, and OEM brands for Acura, Hyundai, Volkswagen, GM & Isuzu. Volvo did not come up as a Make.
Each make had a different potential problem. They included:
1. Fuel system lean during acceleration (came up 3 times as the problem)
2. ETS open
3. Throttle Actuation Potentiometer Signal 2
Analyzing the records from the previous owner, the CEL came on at least 3 times that they took it to a Volvo dealer for. At 23000 miles, it was a loose gas cap, at 75,000 miles it was a Front Oxygen sensor, and at 83,000 miles the notes said, "Find ECM-261A long term fuel trim bank 1 upper limit. Smoke test intake system, find hose/pipe going from turbo to air filter housing leaking and hose from intercooler to ETM leaking. Replace parts as listed.
Suggestions? Thanks pfeener and others who might know!
