Thanks "abscate" for that humor. I needed some good car humor this morning.

I am working on as I write this, getting a rebuilt alternator locally by a shop that may include
the pulley with it. We will see. Buying a new pulley runs another $55 or so it would seem.

BTW - those pulley spline bolts are tight tight tight...

wcm and I had to stand on the alternator and a 24 inch breaker bar to crack mine - and neither of us has 'petite' on their resume.

I think your 1998 alternator spins CW so your spline will be a right hand thread.

My 1999 alternator spins CCW so its a leftie - that also makes the car faster, of course.

OK, I think I am making some progress. Just ordered at lunch break a quality re-built alternator that actually has a new pulley already on it. So am I correct in assuming that I won't need that special tool now? Perhaps this skinny, lightweight can now attempt to pull and replace.

Now all I need to determine is what do I have on the belt tensioner, a female square or do i need to make a male square tool?

I believe it is a large torx on the serpentine belt tensioner but that should be searchable here

Greta idea, thank you for that. You got my juices flowing upstairs. I am going to Home Depot at lunch break today to buy that 1/2" to 3/4" adapter for my breaker bar I have at home. That should do it!
