1991 740 wagon: Oil in the distributor cap

Post by e777 »

Hello all,

I removed my distributor cap (in the head, B230F engine, non-turbo) and noticed that the inside of the cap was soiled with oil and grime. Is there a bad seal somewhere in the distributor that might need replacing?

Thanks,

Eric

yes someone makes a seal kit but I don't know where you can buy it, everyone wants to sell you a rebuilt distributor. When did you last replace the flame trap? That may be the problem. If the trap or hoses going to it are plugged you will get high pressures in the crankcase and you can get leaks anywhere.

Thanks, guys. Question: where is the flame trap? It is not listed in the Haynes index.

OK. I found it. And, yes, it was clogged pretty badly. Thanks again.
