'98 V70 vented steering rack bellows

Post by brunocerous »

Hi all,

Recently, I noticed that my right steering rack boot was shredded, so I went to replace it but noticed the damaged boot had a small opening for a vent hose that the new one didn't. (The rack in my '98 V70 was replaced a couple of years ago, but I don't know what brand it is.)

I haven't seen a vented boot option for the V70, so I was wondering if anyone has encountered this issue, and how to protect the hose opening.

Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe that just allows the bellows to expand and collapse more easily? Installed with the hole at the top where it will allow pressure release but not extrude grease
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )

1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

Makes sense, though there's a hose that connects from the steering rack to the boot.

I hadn't considered the possibility that the hose vents out from the boot. I hope that's the case.
