SRS light reset

Post by Pandavolvo »

I have a 2005 v70 and after jump-starting another car (did NOT have the leads backwards) my SRS light came on. I went to a shop to have it reset as I heard it's a common problem and just requires a quick reset. The shop told me they tried to reset it multiple times and it won't so I need a new start module, which will cost $1300 to replace. I find it hard to believe that such a common issue actually ruined my srs module. Is it possible they just didn't do the right thing? In every post of the problem I've seen it's just a simple reset.

I'd be careful indeed, is that a shop that works/has volvo cars parked around? Many shops that are not into volvo will try erasing the code with standard code readers, and it will not work

Better find someone with the volvo software called Vida, and go from there (look on local advertising such as Craigslist). Vida also will show if there is a problematic module (resist temptation to replace parts, come back here and let us know for advice)

They are a pretty well known European repair shop but I've just never heard of the SRS being actually broken from me jump-starting someone.

You're right that if the module is ruined it's unlikely that it was caused by the jump, I would stop worrying about that. It is just bad timing. The task now is to just move on and figure out how to fix the light.

Ask them what VIDA is reporting about the SRS module, let us know. If they just say it is throwing a code that can't be erased, they aren't using VIDA and that is the problem.

Perhaps not the SRS system. Jumping the battery can cause the small thermistor on the CCM to go bad which affects the CCM functioning. Maybe if the CCM went bad this will disrupt the network

My climate control works fine, and the shop had said that they tried to clear it 6 or 7 times and it came back so I need a $1300 SRS module.

The srs light itself isn't what you reset. You reset any of a number of error codes that trigger the light. Without knowing the actual error code there's nothing to do but guess.

A garage will use the words "reset light" as a generic description of clearing codes - most people have no understanding of how these systems work so they dumb it down.

Rattnalle is completely on point though, the first thing to do is leave the "Post hoc ergo propter hoc' (cause and effect) logical fallacy behind and read the codes.

I am adding the word 'Fora' to this thread just to make its Latin awesome factor 9.5/10

Does the hidden "foglight menu" report anything? Also do a basic sanity check and confirm all your fuses are still good.
