Hi Abscate,
Thanks for the offer. I might take you up on that. I want to proceed with my plan on having a local guy look at it first.
But I do have a question for you all.
Where to get a subframe if I need one. Should I find a running donor car on the cheap with no front damage? (get other parts that way too)
A used parts dealer?
A PnP? If you go to a PnP, how do you get the subframe out? Would they let you just leave the engine sitting on ground? How does that work with pulling a part like a subframe?
For those of you who got one in the past, how did you go about that?
Andy

They have even rolled cars onto their sides for me in my sordid past. They don’t care too much
A blown out car for $200 might not be a bad deal if you have space, as you also get practice on the removal.

Hi Folks,
I have an update for you here.
I got my car back together and I can drive it although, as expected, the alignment is off a bit.
I just talked to a mechanic and he gave me the bad news. Along with my control arm bracket being bent, the subframe itself got twisted and he said there's no good way to fix that.
He said I have two options.
1) get an alignment now and see how close I can get it to be within specs. He says it's not too far out.
2) the real solution is a new subframe. So I'll be on the look out for finding one.
Now the risk of buying a used subframe is that it will be coming off a car that may have had damage already. Anyone have tips on how to inspect a subframe over and above just looking at it?

Oh.. I forgot to ask.
Does anyone know what models of cars I could use as donors for a subframe?
Mine is an S70 manual non turbo. Since I know people do auto->manual conversions without changing subframes, I assume all s70s could be a candidate.
What about V70s? or C70s
Or 850s?
Does anyone know what models are compatible?
Thanks

Put your VIN into the Volvo Parts Lisle website and pull the subframe part number - then hunt a bit to check compatibility using the year/model/make pull down.
Once you have all the reference work done, don't forget to post it back here.
Im showing 5 subframes on the site..

That means they are $50 at the PnP, though.

You could also try Erie Vo-Vo near NYC as they guarantee their used Volvo parts they sell. More pricey than pulling one from a junkyard but at least is is warranted and they did the hard part in pulling it for you. Other thing is to make sure you fit new bushes unless the ones appear to be in fine shape. Factor that into the purchase price too.

If you PnP this you are looking for a non-convertible, Non-AWD. these will be your most direct matchup. These should give you the two-bolt LCAs. AWD subframes usually had 4-bolt LCAs and Convertibles have additional bracing, possibly a plus if you drive hard.
Also, a four-bolt LCA subframe can be used, but it means you can't transfer your new parts over. Just another cost consideration.

Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

Well NY isnt Alberta, but Utica is about 5 hours North of NYC - so a good haul. You could also try Erie Vo-Vo near NYC as they guarantee their used Volvo parts they sell.
I think you know I have friends in Ambler that come through, so we could get one to you cheap on the "Milgram" plan
