850 sunroof drain exit location

Post by johnnyfd »

Does anyone know exactly where this is on the underside of the car and or how to get to it? It seems like it might be under the plastic cladding below the door but I did not want to attempt to pull this off if it was not necessary.I've been trying to get weed wacker line or bailing wire all the way through the drain to come out the bottom so I am certain it is cleared but I can't get the Wire or line to come out of the bottom under the car so that I know it's all the way through and clear. Any other suggestions for the type of wire that might work better than what I'm using?

There are 4 drain tubes. The 2 that run from the front go down the A pillar to the insides of the front fenders. The back 2 run down the back pillar into the trunk area (behind the sound panels) and into a baffled plastic box, one behind and below the gas filler pipe and similar location on the other side. I think there's a diagram online. Neither front or back is below a door. If you drive with the sunroof open a lot, atmospheric crud can build up in the catch tray, then when water dissolves it and runs into the drain tubes some crud can build up inside them.

I cleaned mine out from the top down with a length of 12 gauge single strand insulated wire, with lead end doubled back so there's no sharp wire point to get stuck.

So the front drains run inside the a pillar, not under the a pillar plastic cover as on the V50s?

What are they made out of? Plastic tube or rbber style? Are they just hanging in there or are they supported somehow?

Plastic tubes and be careful as they get brittle where they attach at the sunroof tray and can crack. Can't recall now if they are supported but they do come out just forward of the front doors.

A couple of years ago I thoroughly reamed the tubes in my '93 850 and they still seemed supple and up to handling the treatment. I wasn't trying to abuse them, but their condition was reassuring.

I had the headliner out at the time so the rear tubes were accessible. I don't think you can get to them with everything assembled.

Use compressed air to clean them out, no damage to brittle plastic that way.
