My 2000 volvo s70 randomly dies while drving or idling

Post by Duffpool »

Ive been having this lady for a while now. My volvo will just lose power and die on the side of the road with no warning. Sometimes it will start right back up and other tines it won't. It could go days between episode as well. I have replaced the tps, alternator, mass air flow sensor, cleaned the vvt solenoid, as well as getting my oil changed and putting a seafoam treatment into it.

Usually this Is a fuel pump issue, with fuel pressure being the diagnostic to watch via OBD while driving

Fuel pump just replaced as well. I'm at a loss as to what it could be.

Did you replace the Fuel pump relay?

Is this a turbo or non-turbo?

What brand of fuel pump did you use?

Have you replaced the fuel filter?

You need to pull the fuel pump relay and inspect the terminals for discoloration and burning. Its pretty common on these cars. You can make a jumper wire that you can swap in next time it stalls and won't restart. A relay that is failing might be giving you less fuel pump voltage than usual which will show up as low fuel pressure measured at the rail.

The other much rare possibility is an interruption to the coils (5 of them) 12 V DC power. They all receive 12 V from a common relay, and are fired by the ECU grounding them at the right time.

You need to measure it when the failure occurs, of course. Either a gauge in the trunk or a data logger via OBD

We have had a rash of people putting in both OEM and aftermarket pumps and buggering up the fuel feed lines on install - only one ugly way to look for that - a do-over.

I just had a similar issue with my car, replaced fuel pump, filter, every so often it was still cutting off, ended up being the fuel pump relay. They are prone failure

Same here, fuel pump relay. That should be the first thing you replace if you experience this symptoms. Only when that doesn't help then you start changing something else.

I also carry a jumper with me all the time. You can jump the contacts and drive around until you get the replacement relay (if the jumper does indeed stop the random dying).
