Hi there,
Does anyone know if the end clips on the gas springs should be used or not used?
The old one i examined does not have them installed, but the directions show using them.
I fear that not using them could cause them to pop off by accident, but that's just a guess. They are made to hold the gas spring on to the ball. The old gas spring does have the two tiny holes for the clips, but does not have the clips.
Also, i tried using a 'stick' to hold up the door but it falls out with any slight movement of the door, such as when working on the gas spring removal and installation.
I got the trim off but that was tricky doing it for the first time.
Thanks.

I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

Yes Mr Al...on 98 xc70 ... I used a push broom to hold rear hatch open and do one side at a time. I used a big flat blade screw driver to "pop off" shock and then pop off the other end at roof point. Clips should be internal on those. I place the shock on roof pin and pull...real hard ...and then put other end onto the lift gate. I've done it a few times. Just make sure that the black part of it goes to roof point.... hope this helps

Hi there,
The end clips are tiny pins that push though the end of the gas spring. They came with the gas springs.
The gas springs have tiny holes about 1/16 inch diameter at each end where they fit onto the ball. The end clips have one straight part that goes though the holes. Once the clips are in place, it is impossible or nearly impossible to pull the gas spring off of the ball. Without that end clip, the ends of the gas spring can be pushed off of the ball.
However, the old gas springs had the tiny holes too but NO end clips installed.
The instructions that came with the gas springs say that we should remove the end clips, install the new gas spring, then put back the end clips AFTER the gas spring is installed. That obviously helps to keep the gas spring on the ball joints so that it can never come off.
Since the old one did not have the clips installed, i had to wonder if they were really needed or not. The tunny thing is, none of the videos i have seen so far do not even mention these end clips.
I will try to get a picture of one of these end clips, one loose and one installed on a gas spring.
Here is a picture of the end of the gas spring. The clip is shown fit around the body of the end. It also has a straight part that goes through the tiny holes in the ends of the gas spring which is not visible in the pic, but is visible in the approximate drawing. Oh wait, i just looked again and i see the straight part showing though the ball hole in the end.

I am sorry i dont completely understand what you are saying here.
The clips on these are removable and you have to remove them to get them on. Once on, they can be put back on.
They are tiny pieces of spring steel wire that fit through the tiny holes at the ends of each spring. So there are two clips per spring, four in total for both springs.
I show a pic and approximate drawing in the previous post.

Hi,
I think they got lost in the shuffle
Any place to get more of those clips?

Well MR AL ... I'm sorry you're having so much trouble with these. I saw your photos and I have never bought new ones. I'd just go to the scrapyard and start lifting the lift gate until I found some strong ones
. I didn't know that the new ones didn't come with the clips. Anyway..one thing to consider is that once you "pop off" the shock from the gate itself.. you should be able to un screw the shock off.. there by leaving ball joint end hooked up to to roof mount. I'm not really that good at describe stuff... being the hillbilly that I am. WHATEVER IS HOLDING IT.... UNBOLT IT!! pop...pop...pop 'em off

Hi again,
No they did come with the new gas springs, but during installation or should i say after installation some time they got lost. The old ones that were already on the car did not have the little clips so i figured i did not need them.
They go on so hard i cant see how they could come off by themselves anyway and the old ones never had the clips and they never came off ever.
