The wandering moan!...V70-2004
Driving at slow speed, when the car goes over a very small rise in the road, a slow turn to the left or right, it moans. The sound is most likely coming from the rack and pinion, when it moans from under the car. But the sound can also rear itself from inside the cabin, most likely originateing from the steering wheel column. Is this an early indication that the universal joint on the column is seizing up like they often do? Or is something else a muck? This began few weeks after I converted from Goodyear 4 seasons to Michelin Ice tires.

I don't know the answer to your questions but what I would do as a first step is to check the level and condition of my power steering fluid.

The glove box manuel says the fluid is ATF. The fuid in the power steering is clear in colour and slightly dirty. I have a gallon of ATF transmisson fluid in my garage. Besides the big ATF on the container it reads Mercon3/Dextron, which is always red. Years ago Volvo had a P/S fluid called F that was clear in colour. Does anyone know of hand, the correct aftermarket fluid for a 2004 V70?

Red stuff Dextron goes in the 850/V70 Classic not the new shape jobbies.sony2000 wrote:The glove box manuel says the fluid is ATF. From what I've read they are NOT interchangeable. Double check before you top up.

Not being an expert, just a consumer of the stuff, see link by minds much greater than mine. This was to do with transmission fluid.DieselDoNicely wrote:Red stuff Dextron goes in the 850/V70 Classic not the new shape jobbies.sony2000 wrote:The glove box manuel says the fluid is ATF. Hey now...we're getting into discussion of what goes in the tranny at this point and not what goes in the P.S. reservoir. If you're not sure, just go buy some at the dealer. One quart isn't going to break the bank....but to be honest I've been wondering about this myself. Our V70 also has the clear fluid in the P.S. reservoir and if I ever need to top off, I wonder what to add.

The manual does say ATF....do that's transmission fluid, but like the other poster said...the Volvo ATF is clear...what we're used to as ATF is always red, thus the confusion.

V70, 2004, power steering fluid: After my last posting regarding the ATF listing in the operators manuel, further researching lead me to believe that the correct fluid is CLEAR with a slight green tint. But that is as far as I can take this. Now I'm wondering if it isn't the old F type fluid used by Volvo in the mid 80s? It was clear.
Power steering fluid sold by an online company lists it as being CHF202 Pentosin. 1 liter sells from $32 to $43. Ouch! .......Sounds European.
