Long time ago {03Feb2011}, Bay 13 did a write up on the moaning steering collar/bearing (http://volvospeed.com/volvo_repairs_how ... _lube.html)
The pics are great, but no data on the of year the vehicle being repaired, nor does the how-to give any part numbers.
When I look at 1998 V70R parts book, there is a steering column boot (9461285) and a steering collar (9140164) provided in the diagram shown here: (https://www.volvopartswebstore.com/prod ... 61285.html).
This looks suspiciously like the part in the how-to.
But I'm working with an '05 V70R that has the moan (weather has always been warm when I experience the moan) and the only part I can find related to 2005 is 30741819 and it looks different than what is shown in the how-to.
Getting to my question - is the moan/groan in the how-to specific to earlier models and does not apply to 2005 models? Is it somewhere else in the interior steering column (the sound definitely is in inside the cabin) that is just NOT OBVIOUS?
Thanks for any reply.

Steering moan is the pump usually low on oil, the rubber boot may be damaged causing sounds from the engine bay into the cabin?...
The collar bearing is held in the rubber boot/bellow and can be removed by taking one bolt out on the steering column.
Sorry cant help with part numbers but It may just need some grease, i would try that before buying parts.

I talk a little about the small bearing that gets rusted - pretty easy to clean and lube a bit, what may happen is when it's really rusted, the whole bearing race may start slipping inside the big rubber boot causing it to rub against rubber. Not sure I would call that a moan, more like a mice you just stepped on but still www.youtube.com/watch?v=KG4KWNkgKjc

Also, if you are new to P2 Volvo's, you must absolutely use Pentosin CHF 11S power steering fluid (green can). Low fluid, dirty fluid, or another brand (other than Volvo which I believe is Pentosin) can cause a moan.
Good luck.
Good luck.

I used Prestone's 11S equivalent and it works fine, for the record.
My S60R had moaning steering column that was fixed by greasing the small bearing, definitely check that.

Thanks for the response. Steering reservoir is plumb full. I didn't see any leaks when I was under the car last month changing oil & filter.
I got my copy of VIDA up and running last night & the first diagram I went to was the steering diagram. Nope, same as what is posted on VolvoPartsWebstore.
Maybe "moan" is not the most descriptive term. It's more like an odd rubbing sound (not really a high pitched squeak, but squeak-like) in that it is not a continuous sound but somewhat intermittent during the rotation of the wheel.

Pretty sure is the named bearing at the bottom of steering column under the pedals. Careful with the wing-screw (it's a safety screw) and with the big clamp on the boot. May also check your lower coupler while there but don't lube with anything other that 100% synthetic because it leaks on the top rack seal and anything mineral will damage it and may cause the rack to leak after a while

Get the synthetic grease and go to town - it's a hassle to get it in there but the noise will go away and make you a happy driver!

Is this the diagram to which you may be referring?
https://www.volvopartswebstore.com/show ... ct=1183304 (For 1998 V70)
Or this one?
https://www.volvopartswebstore.com/show ... evel=24677 (For 2005 V70)
The "big clamp on the boot"? Is that a metal or plastic clamp? Some diagrams show what's looks like a zip-tie under or over a funnel shaped
boot.
"May also check your lower coupler while there but don't lube with anything other that 100% synthetic because it leaks on the top rack seal and anything mineral will damage it and may cause the rack to leak after a while"
Will review any lubricants for non-synthetic content.
