1981 Volvo high idle

Post by Klook »

So out of nowhere my '81 245 has developed a high idle.
No issues previous to this, it still runs fun just the idle is too high.

I did a quick check of vacuum leaks, didn't see anything obvious.

I have a throttle body gasket on the way, I'm sure its dirty, but it looks really really awful to do on this car (I've done plenty on LH cars but never a K Jet!).

So I'm hoping to clear this up without having to remove throttle body as I can already see its gonna be a PITA.

Anyway I found that my little black "microswitch", the thing that is supposed to click as soon as you move the throttle and when its closed, isn't matching up. As well, there's a small adjuster screw on the throttle body where the cable stop hits, it looks like the adjustment screw isn't touching the stop so maybe the throttle is hung up? I checked the cable and I did have some slack, not too much. Took out the slack.

So this is my first K Jet....any ideas on how I should attack this would be awesome, thanks!

If you spray Ether (starting fluid) near a vacuum leak, the vacuum will suck in the Ether and your hear the engine surge ...

Intake manifold gaskets, hoses .. etc, just about anything on the intake side.

So a few pics to show what kind of setup is going on here.

I can't figure out why I can't locate this black plastic knobbed "idle adjustment screw" that I've heard mention of and the Haynes manual shows. I can't locate it.

Also can't figure out why it seems the throttle isn't stopping at the end of the little adjuster screw on the throttle body, or why the black throttle position switch is out of adjustment. It seems if all these things are out, why did the car run perfectly for the last year or more?

Very strange, not sure what's going on.
