850 woes (well, minor woes really...)

Post by mistercrunch »

Ok so the latest problems are as follows:

1) When I switch off the aircon, the air coming into the car smells very moist. Any ideas? The heater matrix behind the radio leaks coolant into the car (very minor, this weekend's repair job) but if I understand right that's only when the heater is on. This specific problem (wet air) is from using the a/c to make cold.

2) My interior lights don't work with the doors, they come on fine with the ceiling switch set to 'on', just not when set to 'door'. I replaced the capacitors in the relay (the most likely culprit) but no success. Any ideas?

3) When I drive, there's a high pitched whining noise coming from the front, at any speed in any gear, which stops as soon as I press the clutch. Help??

It's a 96 GLT with 294 000 km's, if that's any help.
Thanks!

answer to #3 which I just had fixed a month ago: throw out bearing on clutch. so you can either get just the bearing replaced or the whole clutch (recommended).

He is right about #3.....don't know about #2 but for #1, I'm 100% sure it's your heater core. You can replace it yourself. Don't let it go too long...it will leak into your cabin floor and be a mess. www.fcpgroton.com sells a kit to replace it...just make sure you don't break off the yellow tabs as the ones from groton are known not to fit correctly.

You need to replace the heater core and the interior lights is probably the overhead switch itself (needs replacing, not uncommon)

The clutch was replaced a few months ago, only done about 5 000 km since. Will check it out anyway.

My aircon stinks like a cheese factory ever 12 months or so, here in UK there is a product called Fabreeze, that gets rid of smells in carpets etc. I spray that into the cabin air intake under the hood, not sure if that helps.
