Coolant

This might sound like a dumb question but what coolant can i use for my 98 v70? Does it have to be "volvo coolant only"??

I have run universal green in my Volvos for years with no problem at all. I would make sure you do several drain and fills beforehand though to make sure there are no issues with incompatibility with whats in there now.

However, someone might be able to correct me, but I believe Volvo Coolant has some sort of additive that gives it an unpleasant taste to prevent animals from drinking it?

Thanks so much! I changed the rad and have flushed any coolant from it. It was green when i saw it all come out.

I did a ton of searching before I landed on my choice of coolant. The consensus seems to be that because most of the internals of your Volvo are aluminum, it needs something other than universal coolant. There are tons of things you can google on why this is needed but if I understand right it comes to what kind of corrosion inhibitor the coolant has and its compatibility with the aluminum.

Zerex brand G-05 coolant or G-48 are the ones I have found that match Volvo specs for coolant and that most people seem to have success with that is at the right price point for me. I would personally never use universal green in my 850.

With this in mind, though, I have nothing I can cite saying that uni coolant has caused a problem, so it is all just forum opinions

Here in Europe the cheap standard coolants all say they're OK for aluminium engines. It's so common now they all have to be or they'd have to label them for use in classic cars only.

The corrosion inhibitors are good for three to five years according to a few different datasheets I've found that listed their life.

Volvo has updated their coolant in the last year or so to reduce the corrosive element in the anti-freeze as well as increasing the preventative elements used in it. As it costs around $20 for a gallon which is enough to do a fill with the added water it is cheap insurance.
