could I have a bad motor mount?

Post by azureblue »

PCV job done successfully now onto the next fix - I have a very short "lag" when I accelerate or decel. In addition I hear a clunk from under the hood. It acts just link a broken motor mount, at least like what previous cars I have owned have had. The upper strut cross brace seems to be loose to me. So how would I go about finding the bad mount? Thanks

Have an assistant get in the car, start it, firmly hold the brake, drop it into gear, and give it a little throttle to apply torque to the drive train. See if the engine rocks excessively. Do this in both Drive and Reverse.

We recommend the above with automatics only, or a good supply of assistants with a standard

A worn axle can cause the same trouble if the mounts are good. June

MDK here...on the motor mounts. I bought a used S60 that I'm going thru. If you're planning on keeping your car for awhile afew years anyway., Just replace them all. Volvo uses recycled material that after about 10 yrs from the heat/cold cycles and oil or whatever they get soft ...my advice anyway. On my 1998 XC 70 I replaced them and I don't think I spent more than 200$ and about 3 hours labor...if you're mechanically inclined... rolling on

+1 replace all at the same time. This is excellent advice. One bad mount will in time ruin the rest. June

I never thought about that - thanks. The car has a vibration around 50mph that I was blaming on out of balance tires...How to check for worn axle, then?
