1999 V70 AWD Dipstick pop & oil splatter, passes glove test

Post by deardeergod »

Popped the hood the other day and noticed quite a bit of oil on top of the engine and fuel rail. Oil dipstick was popped out and oily as well. This would be a fairly recent occurence, I was under the hood a few hundred miles prior and the bay was dry.

I cleaned up the oil and pushed the dipstick down and did the glove test for the PCV system later when the car was running and hot. It passed.

I drove a few hundred miles before checking again and the same has happened. Put the dipstick back down and drove around 30 miles and checked again. All seems to be fine after that trip. I think the dipstick is only popping up during hard pulls and the PCV system isn't keeping up.

The dipstick is still the old style with a single o-ring and fits very loose. Would I be ok with just replacing that and the tube with the new style or should I expect to do a PCV overhaul? The car has over 200k and the last PCV service is unknown.

It could just be the dipstick 'o' ring has hardened. Volvo did replace the single with the double ring for this reason. Be careful that you get a matching tube and double 'O' ring dipstick. Make sure you compare them for position of the Min/Max oil lines as there are different ones. I had one car that took way more oil to fill than was supposed to be based on Volvo data for new oil filter to get the level to Max line. Compared it with another car and found the wrong dip-stick and tube had been fitted so were not correct. Had to score new markings on the dipstick to correct and not overfill.

The 'O' rings for the duel ring set up are obsolete, but the 'P2' uses the same ones and were still available when I last needed some for a P80.
