Hey There-

Have a 99 v70 as my daily driver, 166800 miles. Runs just fine and i average a solid 30mpg highway.

Yesterday i popped hood just to check oil/fluids and found some dried up gunk on exterior of cylinder cover- wondering if anyone has an idea what it could be, oil shows no milky or cloudiness, and theres no creamy buildup under cap-

any ideas?

best,

patrick

The structure looks organic from what I can see. You can see it better, does it look organic or crystals.

Looks like a small animal was sick on your cylinder cover  and the heat from the engine dried it out, sure it was there for a few days. Or at least that's my theory. That or it's bits of the fireproofing material they put under the hood.

I also agree that it looks like a small furry friend may have left that there for you to find. Kind of a calling card!

Watch out for mice as they like to eat wiring.

Looks like you need a PCV system pressure (glove) test and at least a oil filler cap seal ring.

You can see the nuts he had as an appetizer , before the main course, in the divot of the cover.

I guess that means bad starter?
