Tying the fuel door to the regular door locks is a bad idea. You're supposed to lock the car doors while you're pumping fuel and/or going inside the station/mini mart to help deter carjacking. If the fuel lid locks with the doors, you can't do that. Apparently this isn't a problem in Europe.

It's not much of a problem, no. 90 % of the time people pay right by the pump and don't leave the car. The rest of the time we fill up, lock the car then go inside to pay.

I'm guessing, as an outsider, that even in that last 1% it's only an issue 1% of the time. Even though that's not very helpful there and then..

When that 1% of 1% (or 0.0001%) of the time a crime happens....there's enough statistical doubt to legitimately conclude the person asked for it.

Historical anecdote: A "big shot from the '50's" used to make a sweeping left turn from 8th Avenue onto W. 57th St. and stop just clear of the crosswalk to buy the Sunday paper. He'd do this on Saturday nights, late after work.
This is a consistently crowded intersection on Manhattan's West Side. He'd leave the door wide open and the engine running because he thought himself cool.

One day someone stepped into his car as he went around the newsstand and drove the car off. It was found uptown in a relatively good state.

All any of us did was laugh.

Maybe, I don't worry so much about locking the doors or even necessarily rolling the windows up while I fill up at home -small rural farmtown Indiana- but when I'm in Chicago I sure do. Notably this 'activity' has been reaching out into the suburbs in recent years where before you needed to be primarily concerned close to and around the city center. There have been a couple carjacking instances in nearby South Bend IN (aka Notre Dame) area in the last year or two. Which is by no means considered a major city. There was one in Plymouth Indiana about a year ago, a rural small city pop 10,000. Sort of the classic example - while the owner was fueling up at walmart somebody hopped in and drove the car off.
The figure of "99%" of America being safe from this might be a little high.

Even though I don't necessarily lock the car while fueling in hometown IN (pop 5000), I absolutely do pull the key out of the ignition. Many people don't. Because...you never know...

Taking the key of out the ignition is a no brainer regardless of if you lock or not. It never stays in when I get out of the car.

It's even here illegal to leave the car with the key in the ignition. The reasoning being anyone including for example children can get in and get the car rolling more or less intentionally.

Well you nailed it almost exactly right

about 38,000 carjacking victimizations occurred annually, according to victim self-reports to the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS). There were an average 1.7 victimizations per 10,000 persons annually.

I leave the key in, in case I have to make a quick getaway to avoid an asteroid. You should run your fuel tank to empty for the same reason.

Should, or shouldn't? A getaway with an empty tank seems hard to pull off

You don't want to lose an entire gas tank of gas to an asteroid hit. Thats why you wait until the last possible fuel stop on the highway before filling, too. June knows about this.
