Ignition switch issue?

Post by DeathRex »

I drove my 96 850 turbo to McDonalds about 4 minutes away. Got the food and back to the car. When I stuck the key in, the lock cylinder was mighty warm and the car would turn over but not start. I tried about 8-9 times. Went to the back and beat on the fuel pump housing, went to start it and accidently hit the immobilizer, car wouldn't turn over. Pressed the unlock button on the remote and the car started up. I watched Robert's video on removing the switch, but it seems too far away to heat the lock cylinder that quickly.
I didn't do any other checks since I didn't have any tools with me, and it was too loud at McDonalds to be able to hear if the fuel pump was going. Also didn't get a CEL.

Pull the plastic cover down from the steering wheel, there are a couple of Torx screws to release

See if the ignition switch, electrical part is getting hot. Replace if it is.

It sounds like multiple things are happening, no cranks and no starts, ignition switch is definitely something that can cause that.

Didn’t McDonald’s merge with Douglas and start making airplanes?

I followed a write up on MVS on how to clean an ignition switch. One contact was really just carbon. 2 of the other 3 looked just a bit dirty and one looked good. Used 1000 grid sandpaper and deoxit and cleaned them up. It works, have to see if it happens again.
