Need an engine for my son's 1998 T5M. It is the kid's first car, he paid $500 for it. We put a rack in it as well as cam seals. He learned a painful lesson about not pulling over when the low coolant light went on, hence the need for the motor. He loves the car and wants to replace the motor. Another Volvo freak is born!
Just thought I'd ask before hitting the junkyards.
If you decide to go after a P-n-P motor. Pull one out of a wrecked car, you know that engine was running. If you have one of them jump start battery packs, take it with you. You can hook it to the car and read the mileage and if it has nonvolatile memory, you can pull the DCTs. Gives you some clues to the health of the engine.
As you are on the 'Left' coast you could try vandsautodismatlers in Sacramento, CA for and engine, or even Chapman motors on Vancouver Island in Canada. The Chapman Motors guys usually supply good stuff and you may get a good deal with the exchange rate.
Neil.

You're overthinking it a bit in restricting yourself to a VIN 53 engine. The VIN 57 (96 HPT) and VIN 58 (96-97 R) or even B5234T6 (98 R) engines are the same as well. You want any 2.3 liter high pressure turbo engine from a 96, 97 or 98, these are all the same. You could actually use any 95 or 94 turbo as well but there may be a few small quirks to deal with, stick to 96-98 HPT for the straight plug and play.
