Volvo S80 2.4T - Cleaning out the PCV system

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Volvo S80 2.4T - Cleaning out the PCV system

Post by ndphotonl »

Performed some maintenance which is highly recommended for all S80 drivers!

Repaired the PCV circuit, as I suspected the PCV system to be clogged up good. I noticed quite some oil when I mounted the silicone intake. And it seems I was right, as 2 of the 3 holes were fully clogged (car has 316k kms on it). I bought a kit which also replaced the long hose, but after some inspection, that looked like a lot of work for a thursday evening.

Checked all hoses en cleaned the banjo bolt + hole. Replaced the oil separator and the 2 other connecting hoses. The pictures speak for themselves...

Gunk extraordinaire

On a positive note, the valves all looked ok :)

Big advantage when you drive a S80: you have quite some room for DIY maintenance.

Your pictures confirmed what I thought your system would look like. The build up in the two block holes is important to clean out well all the way into the pan. Great work.

If you don't have it together the front banjo bolt on the intake trick I use - put it on only a few threads then seat the intake. Gives you a little more wiggle room. Some have trouble with this bolt. Just make sure you don't cross thread - finger tighten as much as you can.

Next maintenance item I would do is drop the oil pan, clean it out and change out the o-rings.

Yeah the banjo bolt was a tough cookie to crack. I stepped back for a couple of minutes after trying too long. I have small asian hands, but even with small hands, space was tight. After taking a small break, I tried again and it actually gripped :)

Next maintenance is already planned, changing the fuel pump. But I will do the oil pan cleaning someday!
