squeeky steering wheel

Post by davern444 »

The steering wheel in my 98 S70 has a creeky groan inside the car when I turn it sometimes and it sounds like it's coming from right under the wheel near the dash. I recall reading something about it being a bad bushing or something but can't seem to find that post despite searching several times. Anyone have this issue and what bushing are they talking about? It's really annoying and I want to fix it. Any insight or direction is appreciated.

Yep, I had that for years. There's a bushing with bearings at the bottom of the steering wheel column inside the car, covered in a plastic plate. The only way to permanently fix it is having the boot and bearing replaced. I had a mechanic do it while replacing my subframe bushings.

Some people have luck shooting some lubricant/grease into the boot, but it's often only a temporary solution as it was for me.

Try silicon oil sprayed between the plastic boot and the shaft at the bottom as suggested.
