FWIW, the filter in this car appears to be the thinner of the two at 1.5 inches thick (I don't think this car has the special air quality feature). The only text I can make out on the side is BEHR P0806001 but that doesn't appear to be a Volvo number.

Put your VIN into Volvo parts lisle and the part number will one up.

That site doesn't help me much actually. Despite typing in my vin and selecting all the model info they appear to list three different engine filters and I don't understand what the difference it. There are no results for 'cabin filter' and the only other filter they list for this car is a 'carbon filter' that doesn't appear to match what I took out.

The top filter is for all cars except CANADA and Scandinavian markets.

The second is for those sexy Swedes

The last looks like it is for the B5255T4/5 turbo engines

I'm still having trouble here. The cabin filter I took out of this car is exactly 1.25 inches thick, not 1.0 or 1.5. IPD also states that the thinner of the two should be the forward slot, but what I see is the reverse.

Are you by chance just measuring the paper thus getting the 1.25 whereas their measurement included the foam seal?

I'm not sure, I don't think so. For the cabin filter I took out, the accordion paper part itself is 7/8 inches thick, but the surrounding plastic and cardboard edging makes the whole unit 1.25 inches thick. There is/was no foam seal.

Either way, that doesn't explain why IPD says the thinner slot is forward and the thicker slot is rearward when in this car it's clearly the reverse of that.

FWIW, this filter was an extremely tight fit and took a fair amount of effort and screwdriver-prybaring to remove, and after doing so it's obvious that it was squished and folded slightly at some point like it was to long to fit all the way in. Is it possible the last time the dealer replaced this that they used the wrong size from a different model Volvo?

Does the recirculation button have one light on it or two? One light is labeled Auto. One light is labeled Manual.

If it has one light it is the normal AC system and takes the thinner of the two filters-all I've seen offered for sale of this type are plain particulate filters.
If it has two lights your car has the IAQS upgrade and takes the thicker of the two. These are charcoal impregnated.

Also note that the filter is a rectangle with one side slightly truncated. Any replacement has to go in the correct way.

I've seen CAFs which were "all filter" with a stiffer cardboard frame and I've seen rectangular CAFs where foam was used to create the truncated side.

This task shouldn't be all that complicated or challenging.
As abscate said early on, use our vendors. They are good people and there are free shipping thresholds. But if you want additional education, go to RockAuto.com. There you'll find multiple choices.

Local parts stores are not the place to go for Volvo parts. They jack the prices way up for Volvo parts. Also, I'd bet they won't have filters for our cars. Even a $4.00 to $7.00 oil filter element for the white engines costs $14 and that'll be a Purolater.

Regarding your jammed in filter: There's never any telling what some Bozo may have done before you bought your car.

Can you tell if you have Air Quality Sensor installed from the dash lights?

I didn’t know that. Jim warned me about putting the thick carbon filter in without bumping up the air flow in VIDA but I’m in a temperate climate so I didn’t notice it.

Pollen is a much bigger problem in my area. I’ll probably go back to the skinny filter next time.

Interior Air Quality system (option)
Some cars are equipped with a multifilter and air quality sensor. The filter separates gases and particles, thereby reducing the amounts of odors and contaminants entering the car. The air quality sensor detects increased levels of contaminants in the outside air. When the Air quality sensor detects contaminated outside air, the air intake closes and the air inside the passenger compartment is recirculated, i.e. no outside air enters the car. The filter also cleans recirculated passenger compartment air. When the Air quality sensor is activated, the LED AUT comes on in


Operation:
Press to activate the Air quality sensor (normal setting).

Or select one of three functions by pressing .

1. Press : the LED AUT comes on. The Air quality sensor is now activated.

2. Press : no LED is lighted. Recirculation not activated.

3. Press : the LED MAN comes on. Recirculation is now activated.

You can switch between these three functions by repeatedly pressing
Keep the following in mind:
Make it a rule to have the air quality sensor activated at all times.
Recirculation is limited in cold climates to avoid misting up.
If misting occurs, you should deactivate the Air quality sensor.
If the windows mist up, you can also use the windshield and side window defroster functions. See page 53.
The filter should be changed at the intervals listed in the Warranty and Service Records Information booklet. However, if the car is used in a severely contaminated environment, it may be necessary to change the filter more frequently.
