The LED indicator lights are on the "RECIRC" button.
One light = Regular system featuring the thin filter of appx. 1" thickness
Two lights = IAQS system featuring the thick, charcoal impregnated filter of appx. 1.5" thickness.
The only filters I'd warn against are the cheapest of TYC filters for the 1" application. They are just wavy filter paper and way overpriced. If TYC has come around and improved quality I'd be amazed and surprised.
The TYC had the display in parts shops and the sales blurb was aimed at service personnel massively improving their profit margin.
I think the OP toddled off to the parts shop and is waiting delivery to home as it had neither filter in stock.
Air filter part numbers?

I don't believe this car has the quality monitor feature- that wasn't listed as being included when it was bought and the button only has one light. The light comes on when you press it and goes off when you press it again (although if you hold the button for exactly 4 seconds the light flashes a few times for some reason).
The cabin filter itself was forgotten about for ages and is quite old. There are two areas of text on it: printed down one side, and on a sticker on the face. The side printing starts with something I can't make out, then becomes ">PP PES< BEHR P0806001 LA54 16075". The sticker says "99000037 2009-10-02 8FL 352 159-491 BEHR HELLA service Made in AUSTRIA".
Taking pictures of the slot under the footwell was a real pain since I had no camera with a wide enough lens. I had to use a mirror. Hopefully my labeling makes sense. The larger forward slot is blocked off.

Thats the skinny pollen filter, last changed in 2009
Yuck
The flashing button on the recirc is telling you you put it into auto recirc mode - it will recirc air for about 20 minutes then revert to fresh air. User manual covers it in detail
Recirculation (see also page 55)
Press this switch to engage the recirculation function (air in the passenger compartment recirculates - no fresh air enters the compartment). The LED in the switch will light up to indicate that the function is engaged.
Use this function if the outside air is contaminated with exhaust gases, smoke, etc or to heat/cool the car quickly.
Recirculation should not be used for more than 15 minutes. If your windows begin to fog or mist, make sure that the recirculation function is switched off.
Selecting Defroster automatically switches recirculation off.
Timer mode activation: (Cars with Interior Air Quality system have no timer mode) Press and hold the recirculation button for at least 3 seconds to activate a recirculation timer mode. The amber LED in the recirculation button will flash 5 times to show that the timer mode is being activated. In the timer mode, each time the recirculation button is pressed, the climate control system will recirculate the air in the passenger compartment for 5-12 minutes, depending on the outside air and then revert back to fresh air.
Timer mode deactivation: Press and hold the recirculation button for at least 3 seconds. The amber LED in the recirculation button will illuminate steadily for 5 seconds to show a return to "normal" mode.
In normal mode, when the recirculation button is pressed, the climate control system will recirculate the air in the passenger compartment until the recirculation button is pressed again.
Timer mode memory: If the car is turned off while timer mode is active, timer mode will still be active when the car is restarted.

What confuses me is that it's neither 1 or 1.5 inches, and again the thinner slot is not where IPD says it should be. Do the number/codes/shape say something definitive?
Yeah that's not surprising unfortunately. The last time it was brought to a dealer was in like maybe 2010 or something that's probably the filter they put in. I forgot that filter existed and didn't remember until a week ago.

Also, I think the manual I have might be a different edition. Did you type that by hand or copy/paste it from something electronic? Is there somewhere I can download a free copy of the normal US version as a PDF or something? (I can only find free copies of a UK version).

Probably nothing to be gained from fretting about what came out from where and if IPD is right or wrong about your car. This is a good time just put in another one and enjoy filtered cabin air. If you want to use the skinny filter, install it in the thinner slot. For the other filter, use the thicker slot. Your car shipped with the skinny filter from the factory.
Buy one, put it in. FCPEuro has lifetime warranty on every item they sell. All of them. Buy a cabin filter from them now, when it needs replacing send it back for a new one gratis.

I can fit all three filters , oil , cabin, and air, into a small USPS flat rate box. A15 ton press is used.

You can see the thick slot blocked off in your photo, too. If you want to use the thick one, you snap out the plastic blocking piece with a pair of Channelock (tm) pliers - made right here In this US of A States by the fine folks of Erie PA.

People are losing sight of my original question here...
I don't know if I want the "thick" or "thin" filter, that's exactly what I'm trying to figure out. I'm not going to assume this car even takes either of the normal filters given that the size and location of the one I have doesn't match up with anything. I'm not even sure if it was the right filter to begin with. I don't know if this car has some weirdo slot that's different from what's normal, or if everyone's info is wrong, or what.
As it stands right now it appears that the "thin" filter might be too loose to properly fit into the slot, and the "thick" filter would require re-programming the computer. I don't want to buy or reprogram anything until I figure out what the heck's going on. I'm hoping someone can help with that.

It's not supposed to be a squeeze though.
If the slot for the thick slot is blocked you get the thin filter and vice versa. If you're unsure of dimensions order from somewhere they've got that covered for you.
