I titled the Subject line 2001-2007, but I am mainly interested in 2002 (although it most likely doesn't matter).
Anyone know if the oil pan on a 2002 XC70 drops straight down without having to play with the subframe or anything else abnormal?
I have been through most of the posts, but I have not seen anything definitive.
I did it on my old 2001 XC70 and on my 2004 S80 (2.9)- one had interference the other did not - just don't recall. I think the S80 with the 2.9 had the subframe issue.
I looked at VIDA and it appears it comes straight down, but the instructions are for various car models.
My brother has the 2002 so I need to know what tools I will need to carry.
Anyone with fresh experience?
It would also help for forum members that have done it with different year XC70s (2001-2007) to note their year and observations for future searches.

I recently dropped the pan on my 2001 V70 2.4T. It does not come straight down, but with turning and moving around...it comes down without removing subframe bolts. I replaced that lower trans mount because of removing it.
Before putting the pan back on, I did a dry run to see what I had to do...….then glue and presto.

Did you buy the "official Volvo oil pan glue" (sealer) or are there quality, generic substitutes?
Is it true you apply the stuff with a little roller?

I used the Volvo glue (liquid gasket high temperature) 30644517, and did buy a little pan and roller kit to apply.
For the pan bolts I doped them with Gasoila (Federal Process Co.) Teflon pipe dope.

Thanks ignatz. Plan is to change the PCV system and if the passage is not clear drop the pan. Your info will lighten my tool chest - so much appreciated. I will follow up with what I find.
For the pan I have used Permatex Anaerobic Gasket Maker and used a roller set up I bought at the dollar store. On the two I have done, no issues.

I had to drop my pan because of a 1 to 2 second oil light delay on startup. The longer the car sat (2 or 3 days), it would sound like I just changed the oil. I never got a message that said anything, just a delayed oil light that I noticed.
Before I did this repair, I ran out a Mobil 1 5-30 HM oil change to 8,000 miles and had the oil analyzed. 7PPM level of lead was showing that I had to do something.
The two pan/block O-rings looked ok, but the oil pickup O-ring was crooked and was the culprit allowing the oil to drain back after driving.
Any way.....that PCV channel in my pan and block was gooped up and blocked. The pan cleaning took ,a long time with simple green because of baked on stuff on the bottom of the pan. After I bought this car I changed the oil 4 times with Mobil 1 thinking this oil magically scrubs and cleans the inside of an engine. Not in this car. I'm sure my car got oil changes, but at Jiffy lube type places with cheaper oil.
So, dropping my oil pan for the oil pickup issue was a success, and cleaning the PCV channel has decreased my oil consumption from a quart in 2,000 miles to a quart in 3,000 miles. The oil consumption seems to be getting better over time.
I'll run out this oil change to 7-8,000 miles and get the oil analyzed and post to complete this repair story.
I have 4,800 miles on this oil change, so it might be Oct-Nov until I get the oil checked.

I'm bringing up this post again because I just got another oil analysis done by Blackstone Labs. I ran an 8,200 mile oil run of Mobil 1 5-30 HM and my oil PPM came down. Its 3PPM instead of 7PPM, so its a lot better at around the same mileage. Not 0 or 1 PPM, but a move in the right direction.
The iron also came down to their universal averages. I'll probably be doing oil analysis checks as time goes by just to be curious. I would think at some point the lead has to go back up...…...just don't know when this will happen.

Knowing the subframe doesn't need removal to drop the oil pan I'm adding that onto my restore list. The 2007 XC70 I got last May did get a PCV cleaning earlier this year but it was clogged for quite some time. There was old crud on all intercooler hoses including the plastic one hooked to the ETM. The clogged PCV pressure gave the oil pump seal a slow leak. As I noted in my previous post it was old crud collecting dirt. After I cleaned it I found no fresh oil and there's been no oil loss between changes.
1. Oil Pan drop, scrub, and new O-rings
2. New timing belt, tensioner, & idler
3. New Aisin Water pump
4. New Beck Arnely Thermostat
5. Cooolant flush
6. Manifold removal to check PCV and clean injectors with new O-rings
7. New Oil pump kit
Already have Permatex Liquid Gasket so I'll just need to get oil pan O-rings at the local dealer.
Thanks IGNATZ!

Site sponsor FCPEuro has a kit - just order the one w/o the sealant. It is under $15 if I recall.

FCP has an Oil Pan Gasket Kit and an Oil Sump Gasket Kit. Which of these 2 kits should I get to drop the oil pan?SuperHerman wrote: ↑07 Dec 2018, 20:53 Site sponsor FCPEuro has a kit - just order the one w/o the sealant. It is under $15 if I recall.

Will one tube 50ml of Permatex Anaerobic Gasket maker be enough or do I need 2 tubes?
I ordered 1/4 pint of Gasoila pipe thread sealant from Amazon.
