2005 T5 V50 won't start

Post by MDK »

Hey all... I need a little advise. Car won't start. I checked and no codes except for small leak in EVAP @ tank. No fuel pressure at the rail. If it was a fuel module, wouldn't that throw a code? Car has 196,000 plus miles. I'm guessing a fuel pump. Any and all comments appreciated....MDK ..not rolling on,.. apparently

Give it a three second shot of starting fluid, see if it fires up. If it does you have a fuel problem.

After several attempts do you get an Immobilizer message? Does the car turn over the starter motor or is it silent (just a click heard when you turn the key)

CEMs are notorious on 2005 V50s so I hope it's not this.

I shot some starting fluid in the intake and it tried to fire.... I pushed in the valve on the fuel rail and nothing. A few weeks ago the code came up for the fuel pressure sensor which I have replaced. This time ..crank but won't start and no codes. One guy said if the fuel pump relay goes bad it may not throw a code. Not sure if that's true. Fuel pump fuse is good

Did you understand by "fire" I mean the cylinders ignite but the engine does not necessarily get up and run?
No pressure on the fuel rail, this is looking like a fuel problem.

From Vida: "The central electronic module (CEM) (4/56) receives a request from the engine control module (ECM) (4/46) via the control area network (CAN) to start the fuel pump (FP). The central electronic module (CEM) then activates the relay (2/23) which supplies the fuel pump unit (4/83) with power, which in turn powers the fuel pump (FP) (6/33)."

Get a copy of Vida and work through the test procedures as below (this is only the 1st screenshot)

Well precopster... I appreciate your post. It's interesting to read and see how all the systems work together but, they're are no codes to read. When I plug in my vida/dice it shows that...no faults found. I guess the pump is bad. Why are Volvo's so difficult? Don't they want to sell cars? ....

On the CEM under the glovebox (you can remove a felt cover to acess it) is a fuel pump relay. Swap it with one of the other black relays in the engine bay.

On the other side of the pictured CEM is the fuel relay. You can jump pin 30 and 87 where they plug in on the CEM to see if the fuel system regains pressure

Yagger and I just swapped out a CEM on a V50 and chased afew gremlins down.....lots of fun :D

Hey precopster... I appreciate the photos.. helps a lot. I was under the impression that the cem was under the hood and the panel under the glove box was a relay/ fuse box.( Unless they are both called that) I'll try your suggestions and let you know what I come up with.... thanks again...MDK

No some relays and fuses under the "hood" near the battery and CEM under the glovebox.

The white plastic encases quite a complex piece of circuitry worth around $500 at dealers. BTW if it is the CEM or cemetery?? as you call it that's faulty you'll need to have one programmed at the dealer or cloned by an independant.

The photo I took of the side with the fuel relay has vacant connectors because that's the CEM we removed from the car.
