06 S60 rear headrest won't flip down

Post by erikv11 »

One of the retractable rear seat headrests doesn't flip down when I push the button on the dash. I can't hear anything clicking on that side, so maybe there is a problem with the actuator. The other side works so I'm assuming fuse and relay are good, problem must be in the mechanism on the stuck (passenger) side.

I've read VIDA (not much there) and seen some useful tips here https://forums.swedespeed.com/showthrea ... ip-back-up, should be pretty easy to get at the mechanism if I can remove the head rest frame.

But a potential problem is the headrest is stuck in the up position, the directions say to flip it down first in order to remove it. I haven't poked around back there but can you flip it down manually? Or other experience with this, know what might be wrong and/or be fixable?

Hopefully will have time this weekend to get a look at it. If its broken I don't think I'll replace it (Volvo part number 30767675 about $150), just live with it unless I can find a folding one at a PNP. Looks like S80 has the same part.

Well I took a look at this today. All wiring seems intact, no easy solution there like an unplugged connector.

When the headrest goes down, it is very easy to get at the internals where the flip mechanism is. But with it stuck upright, I couldn't figure out how to get in there, or how to drop it down manually to gain access.

Going into holding pattern ...

May as well try on a car at the junk yard - easy to just cut the back cover and see inside ;)

It's a solenoid latch. There's probably a way to insert a pick or tiny screwdriver to push the latch/flip down the headrest. I betcha a dealer tech or two knows how to do it. If you had a working new or salvage car actuator already pulled you'd likely be able to see just where to stick stick something down in there...

It would drive me a little nutty if either or both of those electronic headrests stopped working. They were a selling point of the vehicle as in along with the front heated seat option, I tended to shy away from specific vehicles that didn't have it.

Yard is a good idea, or at least I can get a replacement while I wait to figure out how to get in there. I may actually be up in Minneapolis this weekend with time to visit one.

Exactly!

There are a couple techs who still visit the forum over at VS, I am going to try there too.

I like these rear headrests. Beside being a rare option among other cars, nothing beats smaking the rear passengers now and then

Good to know they aren't failing all over the place, gives me hope I can maybe fix it only once.

It might be on those esoteric repairs, like wheel bearings.

So you're saying I should check the parking brake shoes?
