jack stowage - how does it work?

Post by 850forum »

The illustration in the 850 manual doesn't match exactly with the way the jack appears. "donut" type spare. Having trouble getting it so it won't rattle around.

1) The threaded rod which holds it to the rim -- I would need to crank the "nut" down 2" to make it tight. I can only get about 1/2" before it won't go any tighter -- sloppy thread cutting? Too much plating ?? Tapered rod ??? So it rattles & bumps around. Also the design seems to threaten to bend the rim near the bolt holes if you actually tighten it down.

2) the picture shows that the base of the jack is at a 90 degree angle to the "stand" portion. I cannot crank the jack into that angle.

3) the tire iron is shown with the nut end rotated "parallel" to the "stand" -- but it won't project beyond the stand to achieve that.

4) the jack rotating handle is shown "over the top" of the "stand" -- I can't get it into that position (maybe if I crank the stand upwards, but then the base is further from a 90 degree angle & its too long to fit inside the rim.

5) funky shaped piece of wood above, with cutouts that appear to be for threading the tiedown strap thru. Or not ???

I do have the foam ring upon which the spare sits.

Can't recall if the 850 and V70 are exactly the same but maybe this helps if they are:
V70 spare wheel and jack mount
V70 spare wheel and jack mount
Foam insert for spare wheel
Foam insert for spare wheel

Although not really pretty, I usually have rags wrapped around the jack. That helps.

Someone probably cross threaded the hold-down clamp which is why it stops. Try running a die down it to clean up the threads if you want to use that function. I wrap and bungie it down since I load a toolbox and other safety stuff into the well.

Your photo above shows the foot of the jack cranked upwards into a J shape with the body of the jack.
I don't think I can crank it that far... have to try it out.
The book shows the tool pouch UNDER one end of the jack, which would serve to lift it a bit higher.

I don't have the proper (metric ??) tap & die to chase it -- but it does not appear munged up at the point it stops.
Anybody know the diameter & thread size? Probably NC not NF ?
Yea I have lotsa rags...

A curved tool box to fit around an arc of the outside diameter of the tire would be excellent -- anybody have mad 3D printing skilz? Also serve to brace the tire so it doesn't rattle around.

An why did they design it so the valve is facing down, so you have to remove the thing to check the pressure?
A round box to hold the jack, and also support the tire w/ valve up, would be nice.

I keep an inflator in the car so I don’t check the tire pressure more than once a year, if that. I fit jumper cables, inflator, tool kit, flashlight, wood blocks into that space.

1. Throw away the donut spare and the styrofoam that goes with it.
2. Dremel off or grind off the protuberance from the third row seat belt anchorage, if so equipped.
3. Wrap the jack in an old bath towel, place in the tire well.
4. Put a full size spare in there.
5. Put the floor board or seat back in.

And just to say it before abscate does: be careful with the wiring for the heated third row seat. If so equipped.

You can chase it with a nice grade 8 or 10 hardened bolt I bet. Ill swag it as an M8 or m10?
