2001 S60 problems

Post by mark458 »

OK I cant seem to figure this out... The drivers front window doesn't work, the sunroof doesn't work, the cluster doesn't work, the climate control doesn't work and the turn signals don't work... I cant put power to most of these and turn them on but otherwise they wont turn on.

You have a 2001, a 1st year car, good luck!!

In the meantime try this:
Take your key and lock and unlock the driver's door three (3) times in a row. Not 2, not 4, 3 times.
DO NOT use the remote, use the key and do this manually.

That should reset some of your functions but until the car is scanned with VIDA (Volvo's computer) you're just aiming in the dark. VIDA will direct you to the problems instead of guessing but first try the lock/unlock deal and post back/
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP

Correct battery reconnect for a P2 series is:

Place key in PosII reconnect negative lead to battery, then do Key lock/unlock procedure as above.

Report back and we'll try to help some more

Actually the first year was the 2000 model P2s sold in Great Britain, Oz and afew others.

By 2001 there were some improvements in DIM and programming.

My T5 is a 2000 P2 but for the sake of continuity for the forum I refer to it as a 2001.

I looked at the diagram and there might be a common +Battery point for these. Under the hood, in addition to the fuse/relay panel on an '01 there are also another panel buried somewhere in there with 7+ large amperage fusible links similar to what my '06 has back in the trunk next to the battery.

Fuse 11A/4, a 60 amp fuse, is protection for sub fuses 21-29 located in the passenger compartment which includes, or feeds something else that eventually supplies all of the items you listed, including a power feed that is controlled by a relay on the CEM that goes to the instrument cluster.

Now, unless it's something like corrosion or a loose bolt causing an open circuit, these large fuses don't normally blow unless there's a dead short to ground somewhere down the line that you'll need to find and correct.

At the very least, check with a voltmeter whether you have 12v battery voltage on both sides of that fuse.

Checked all these modules are properly connnected? Id try a spare climate control unit and then check the CEM for corrosion or replace some relays on it as mentioned above

Thanks for all the input guys! Ill try that later on today. Can you not use a $10k snapon tool to scan the system? Does it have to be a VIDA? If so can you buy a VIDA off ebay like the Tech2 for $400?

Houston we have a problem!! :D Check all the fuses with a test light of at least 15W. A light provides load to the circuit and tests if the circuit can handle current.

The Vida/Dice system is around $USD85-$100 but they are all copies of the real thing which costs well over $1,000. The software is legitimate and the Dice readers are mostly good. The Vida software comes with a crack so it will run without a license.

The Snap On may be a good tool but I've heard of various Snap-On models that can't see EVERY module on EVERY Volvo. Dice sees all modules on all 99+ models until 2015.

If you have power at fuses 21-29, I'm at a loss. I'm not sure VIDA will give you much to go on other than these modules aren't responding.
In your first post you stated if you put power to these items they will turn on, but otherwise not. Can you elaborate where you're applying power? At the module or somewhere up the line in the wiring or fuse panel?

I'm not ruling out there may be a relay involved, though either it isn't shown or I'm simply having trouble reading the diagram to find it. On the later model years there's a relay inside the CEM that can go bad that takes out (all at once) the power passenger seat, radio, cigar lighter/power port, and the nav system if equipped, while the climate control is on the 'main relay' that is shared with other items in the passenger compartment. Granted there are other major differences between yours and the '05+ I'm talking about, however there are more similarities than differences in the overall electrical layout.

Unplug the drivers window and put power straight from the battery to the motor and it works, same with the sunroof. Remove climate control and put power straight to it and it turns on.
