850R components questions

Post by johnnyfd »

I did some extensive searching in order to determine which components were varied in the 850 R (not so much the T-5R) . I'm pretty clear on most of the US spec stuff except for three items which were mentioned at the Volvo tips website, but were not refered to with regard to the US spec . I could not find any information anywhere else as to wheather these three components were varied in the US spec . The three components in question are the intake manifold, intercooler, and the fpr. It appears the European 850R at least in manual form had these upgraded. Since I never hear anybody speaking of them in the US if I had to guess I would say they're not varied in the US spec 850R but I wanted to ask around if anyone knew anything about it just in case there were some variations that most people were unaware of. I almost forgot I have also heard in the past a couple of people mention a variation in the exhaust manifold does anybody know the validity of this?

In my experience, none of those four are any different in the US spec 850 R (intake manifold, intercooler, and definitely not the exhaust manifold or FPR).

Im reading Johnny wants to know difference between North American and EU 850R, 1996, focussed on

Intake manifold, FPR, and intercooler.

Someone with VIDA can probably punch in the market code and settle this quickly

I fully understand the disinterest in T5s as they are way ahead and can't be caught, anyway.

Yes, the way Abscate rephrased it is what I'm referring to. I know if these components are different that they only have a slight variance. Maybe if they are varied it is barely noticeable.

The FPR-injectors-tune combos are well vetted in the forums (fora!), even for EU spec cars.

While we are waiting for the book answer (and remember, the book is well known to be wrong about some things ...) and still allowing speculation ... To use slightly varied core parts is not how Volvo has done anything over the years, I highly doubt it. If there is a difference it is least likely to be something barely noticeable. But I don't know much at all about the EU cars, so can't directly answer the question.

misha may have some informed insight on this one.

I have a 94 T5-M with M4.3 and an 96 R with auto tranny and M4.3.
From what I can see the intake manifold looks exacly the same, as well as the intercooler. They both have 15Gs. The manual Rs had M4.4, a 16 T and the M59 tranny and a specual clutch. The injectors on both are orange. The downpipes look identical just like the exhaust.

Only big difference is that the 94 has the stock reverse intercooler piping and an EGR system.

Numbers might tell a different story, but differences are not visible to me.
