That’s a great price for that job. To DIY, you get a junkyard compressor for $50-100, 4 hours labor, then $100 to evacuate and charge

You can change the pulley bearing. Search the DIY I wrote for 1998 S70.

So was the compressor actually more or less working? I'm just aware some shops may not be that honest.

No new compressor is only a few hundred dollars, something is fishy with that quote. Unless it's some chinese junk or refurb compressor. Used genuine ones off Ebay are not much and should be reliable

But, if it's not the compressor, as mentioned the pulley bearing can be replaced fairly 'easily' (use a quality brand)

What bearing brand do you recommended for our AC compressor clutch?

Just noticed my AC compressor starting squealing while having the front defrost on. I used my stethoscope to determine it is the AC clutch bearing that is whining.

I won't drive it before replacing the bearing. See video description

The video description links to a 35x55x20 sized bearing. I replaced a handful of AC pulley bearings and prefer the NSK

Just ordered it.

I did the AC Pulley bearing on my 1998 S70 GLT using Nachi bearing.
The DIY is below, S60 AC Pulley is almost the same in principle.

Make sure you take your time to read through this...

I had to 'slightly' pry the clutch out as well... didn't feel comfortable about this as it bends the plate then the plate may rub against the pulley. But it worked fine in the end. What's annoying is the tolerances for the clutch plate on shaft are so small, it slides really not easy and I had to remove it twice because I didn't got the correct gap from the first time. While there, for the original poster, it's also the right time to remove shims to reduce the gap. In theory, the gap must be the smallest possible while the clutch plate still doesn't rub against the pulley while it's stopped.

Thanks for the writeup. I'd follow your tips to completely remove the compressor. I've recharged dozens of AC systems using my 60 gallon air compressor and AC manifold gauge. Already have pag46 oil and several cans of R134a. Along with the bearing I just needed to order the O-rings and drier. Also will use my 32 ton shop press to exchange bearings.

I'll need to search around for the amount of oil and freon our system takes. Is it labelled under the hood anywhere?

Sticker under the hood for the AC charge, the PAG charge won't be necessary since you aren't changing any components that use oil. You could put 30-60g into the receiver if you get it open, but that is a lot of work and possibility to damage hard lines doing that.

You can just drop the compressor on the V70 without evacuating to change the bearing, i don't know about the s60
